Back to basics

If ever there was a Porsche destined for ‘modern-classic’ status, it was the 991-generation 911 R from 2016. Unlike its motorsport-derived ‘Rennsport’ counterpart, the GT3 RS, Porsche trod the back-to-basics path for its modern-day ode to the lightest 911 ever produced, the R.

Driver engagement was the primary focus rather than track prowess. That’s why the 911 R was only offered with a six-speed manual transmission, much to the delight of the Porsche purists. Furthermore, peak power from the 493bhp four-litre flat-six was delivered to the rear wheels higher in the rev range, at 6,250rpm – another subtle nod to the peaky power of its historic forebears.

While the ground-hugging bumpers and centre-lock wheels from the GT3 RS are carried over, gone are the in-your-face aerodynamic wing, haunch scoops and slatted wing vents. Combined with plastic side and rear windows, less sound deadening, no rear seats and the deletion of creature comforts such as the stereo and air-conditioning, the 911 R tipped the scales at just 1,370kg, 50kg lighter than the GT3 RS. Needless to say, at the time, it was the lightest 911 in Porsche’s range.

“Unlike its motorsport-derived ‘Rennsport’ counterpart, the GT3 RS, Porsche trod the back-to-basics path for its modern-day ode to the lightest 911 ever produced, the R.”

No marque’s clientele boasts such an insatiable appetite for the past than Porsche’s. And the Zuffenhausen marque knows it. For many, the 911 R’s visual nods to its heritage – the dual red stripes and the houndstooth seat inserts, for example – will appeal every bit as much as the engaged driving experience.

This Porsche 911 R

Of the mere 991 Porsche 911 Rs built, the left-hand-drive example we’re offering is number 690. Finished in GT Silver Metallic over a Brown leather interior, the car’s factory specification is nothing short of exhaustive. We have listed it in full at the bottom of this page, though features that pricked our interest include the red decorative livery, the lightweight single-mass flywheel, the 918 Spyder carbon-fibre bucket seats and the satin silver wheels. For those warm summer drives, this particular 911 R is fitted with air-conditioning.

This Porsche 911 R left Zuffenhausen in January of 2016, destined for the first of its mere two private owners, a collector based in Panama. The car remained in South America for six years, during which time it covered just 2,214km and was regularly serviced, exclusively by the Porsche Centre Panama. Crucially, in 2019 this Porsche was issued with long-term warranty, which does not expire until December of 2028.

Chassis number 194497 was imported to and road registered in the United Kingdom in 2022, shortly after which it was acquired by its second and final private owner. Though driven infrequently since then (the odometer currently reads 1,920 miles), the car has been regularly maintained by the Porsche Centre Reading. From a condition perspective, this 911 R presents exactly as you’d expect given the ultra-low mileage.

Save for a handful of tiny imperfections to the GT Silver Metallic paintwork and some small patches of wear to the leather driver’s seat bolster, this Porsche is flawless. Satisfyingly, this 911 is accompanied by everything you’d hope to find with a modern-era Porsche: its leather documents pouch complete with stamped service book, its spare key, its tool kit and a Girardo & Co. history file comprising all its corresponding service invoices.

There is a very strong argument to suggest that the 991-generation R might just be the greatest modern-era 911 of them all. We’d argue further that this left-hand-drive UK road-registered car, chassis number 194497, is among the very best 911 Rs currently available anywhere.
