  3. 964 engine & reinforced 915/61 gearbox

Porsche 911S Targa Safari. A Targa. And one that can really handle it. Not just a city cruiser – okay, it can do that too. But it can also take a beating. It's not just pretending. It's truly capable.

If it were easy, everyone would do it… Exactly!!!

This is a 1977 Porsche 911 S Targa. It originally had matching numbers. Now it has a 3.6-liter M64/01 engine and therefore no longer has matching numbers. Sorry, but we couldn't compromise on that. Completely overhauled and thus like new, this engine was paired with the reinforced, original 5-speed 915/61 gearbox.

... Chronology of Work and Specifications

  • Complete disassembly of the car down to the bare chassis for inventory and to carry out the necessary bodywork.

  • All screws, nuts, washers, and many other small parts were collected, inspected, and, if suitable, cleaned and re-galvanized or yellow-zinc-plated at a specialist company.

  • The body was then taken to Wiechers (a great company, RIP), where a roll cage made of Chromo 4 steel was custom-made for the car and perfectly fitted. The cage runs through the entire body, from the rear to the front shock absorber mounts, to which it is also welded. It was constructed in such a way that the function of the Targa roof is in no way impaired. Furthermore, the Wiechers specialists welded in additional body reinforcements and re-welded important areas of the body. Supplement 15/4E of FIA Homologation No. 3053 for the 1973 Carrera RS served as our guideline for this work.

  • Then came the adaptation of the suspension, based on Bilstein dampers and components from the 991 GT3, to the body, including the necessary minor bodywork modifications. It was important to me to alter the body lines as little as possible. I'm not a fan of those "safaris" armed with far too wide tires.

  • The paintwork was done in Porsche's Stone Grey 5710. This was first offered as a special color for the 356 in 1957.

  • Meanwhile, the 964 engine and transmission were completely rebuilt with new parts and tuned to each other.

  • The transmission was completely overhauled and reinforced at FSR Sportauto.

It has a complete stainless steel exhaust system, including tubular manifolds and a functioning heating element. Thanks to Albert Motorsport for the amazing sound.

  • Cargraphic complete brake system in Turbo dimensions with red brake calipers including Safari logo

  • Alloy wheels with a steel rim look from Group4Wheels in Great Britain

  • Targa roof overhauled and reupholstered with original Sonnenland fabric

  • Refurbishment of the stainless steel Targa bar trim and restoration of the factory surface finish by a specialist workshop

  • Installation of an electric 2-ton winch for emergencies

  • LED headlights and LED taillights

  • Rennline shifter – making the 915 gearbox a real joy to drive

  • Additional Rennline parts are installed in the interior (control levers, heater control panel, fire extinguisher bracket for the color-matched fire extinguisher, mobile phone holder, cup holders).

  • Sport seats from DP Motorsport and special seat brackets – these allow even me (197cm) to fit comfortably in the 911 with plenty of headroom.

There are many more details – listing them all would be beyond the scope of this description. But one more thing – the Targa is more torsionally rigid than many a coupe will ever be. This means you can take it off-road, legally. We built the car from the very beginning in close consultation with the TÜV (German Technical Inspection Association) testing engineer and incorporated his feedback. Everything is registered without any tricks and therefore road legal.

This car is absolutely unique and built to perfection. Down to the last detail.
