In 2001, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the successor to the 129 series, the R230. The new SL featured a range of technical innovations, such as the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system, which uses steel springs to (almost) completely compensate for body roll and pitch during acceleration, braking, and cornering. The retractable roof, known as the Variorof, is another innovation. It can be stowed electrohydraulically in the trunk, transforming a full-fledged coupe into a full-fledged roadster.

Our 2006 SL55 AMG, with just under 70,000 kilometers on the odometer, features the sportiest engine in the series. A 5.4-liter V8 engine—supported by a supercharger—delivers a staggering 517 hp by the standards of the time in our vehicle, which was built for the Japanese market. But even today, the SL55 AMG still holds its own with the performance it offers.
