Why wait to restore a car until it is completely at its end? A good base may make a 50% difference to the amount of work you will need to expend. Using a car means things wear out, the bodywork shows signs of use, the paintwork loses some of its lustre and the mechanicals become a little weary. All this belongs to a car’s normal ageing process. Matters were very much the same for this Porsche 993. But it also formed a nice and sound base to build upon. The car had done 215,000 km before the restoration. Over some 25 years that works out at less than 10,000 km per year, so that is not too concerning for such a multi-faceted car. The 993 Turbo was really quite the series sweet spot. The RS was too hardcore and expensive, the Turbo S came later and the 993 Carrera 4 was according to many simply too slow. Matters are quite different with this 450 Ps strong 4WD 911! It was and still is quite the beast. There is not much to challenge all of that air-cooled muscle behind you. Our car was supplied from new in Stuttgart and via a small detour to Spain landed back home in Germany. It was there it underwent expert restoration costing over € 140,000.
This undertaking could not have been more thorough. They did not just charge in but formed a clear plan of attack before tackling this task. This plan went as follows: First of all the car was to be taken back to its constituent parts, then decided which parts could be reused, which parts needed to go to
be powder-coated or resprayed and which parts would be needed to be sandblasting. Then the mechanical aspect would be next, with the decision taken to fully rebuild, largely using original components. The nice thing when restoring a Porsche is that all parts are still available from the factory. The condition of the interior was representative of the kind of Porsche quality the Stuttgart brand is renowned for. All of the suspension rubbers and bushes are to be replaced as well as the brakes and chassis.
Following the plan, to the letter, a start was made with the restoration work. The car was fully taken apart, right down to the very last screw. The bodywork was ice blasted and straightened out before expertly being resprayed in her original and now magnificent looking “Irisblau Metallic” finish. The wheels underwent the same process before being resprayed in their original colour. Once the respray was done a start was made putting the car back together. This was done with the upmost precision. The panel gaps are just as fine as they were when the car left the factory and the panelwork is lovely and thin. As a finishing touch new logos were fitted to the rims.
It was then the turn for the mechanics of the car. Both engine and transmission were totally disassembled and although in pretty good shape the previous owner saw the potential for improvement. The engine and transmission were taken in hand by an expert and fully overhauled and re-tuned. The 993 Turbo is even today still a seriously fast car that measures up quite well against much younger sports cars. This specific 993 also finds itself nicely supported by a Bilstein PS19 chassis, adding darn good road-holding to its pretty stance. The shocks have height adjustment as well as independently adjustable cushioning and rebound. Its good quality tyres help to convey the 450 Ps safely onto the tarmac.
The 993 Turbo is fitted out with all the necessary luxury you could wish for. It has Litronic Xenon lights, a slide & tilt sunroof, climate control, cruise control, Becker SatNav, fully electrically adjustable and heated seats, electric windows, a front windscreen sunblind, third brake light, carbon mirror hoods, sports exhaust, carbon strut brace, spare wheel and finally a full leather interior (including the dashboard).
The car comes with the original car wallet complete with all its booklets. The restoration itself has been very thoroughly documented with an extensive photo album. The quality of the shoot shows the keen eye for recording those details that count. After all, it is easy these days to take thousands of pictures but the art is in recording what is truly essential. Just a small detail reveals the dedication to perfection is how the sticker from the luggage compartment was carefully removed and preserved. It all goes to emphasise that the people who worked on this car knew exactly what they were about; delivering a car that feels and drives so good.
At the end of the day, you buy a Porsche 993 Turbo to drive it. Even though this one is 26 years old it still never fails to impress how fast it gathers speed and dissipates it again using those enormous brakes and red brake callipers. The Bilstein chassis has been tuned for road use and gives this car lovely comfortable road manners. This 993 Turbo is simply just that little bit better in every aspect compared to a standard version. This is the car for the person wanting the very best 993 Turbo on the market, safe in the knowledge they won't be troubled with any restoration in the coming years. This is literally turn-key 993 Turbo driving pleasure!
