Description

The BMW E9 Coupé

BMW advertised the elegant and perfectly shaped CS coupés under the famous slogan "The joy of driving". They are undoubtedly among the milestones from BMW - not least because of their fantastic silky smooth and turbine-like six-cylinder engine and the very elegant design. The engine, later known as the M30, was to become a pillar of BMW's reputation as an engine manufacturer (and was kept in the programme, in various modifications of course, until 1996). It is a really fine unit, the block is made of grey cast iron, the cylinder head of light alloy, the overhead camshaft is driven by a chain; by varying the bore, displacements of between 2.5 and 3.5 litres were possible. The bodies were built between 1968 and 1975 on a contract basis by BMW at the Karmann company and then transported to Munich for completion.

The design is attributed to Wilhelm Hofmeister - the famous "Hofmeister kink" on the C-pillar. But we already discover this stabilising kink in the BMW 3200 CS, designed by Bertone. In any case, Italian stylistic elements are unmistakably present in the BMW E9, which contributes significantly to the lightness and filigree appearance.

The first models were the 2800 CS with 170 hp, followed by the 3.0 CS (180 hp) as a carburettor version. In autumn 1971, the first petrol injection model variant was added, the 3.0 CSI (200 hp).

The CSL models are legendary - and extremely successful in motorsport in particular - with the L standing for lightweight construction. Depending on the delivery version, the CSLs were fitted with aluminium doors and bonnets, lighter sports seats, thinner sheet metal and much more, resulting in a total weight reduction of 150 kg.  The CSL was fitted with the same engine as the CSI. Thanks to the consistent lightweight construction, agility and sprightliness were significantly increased and the CSL was almost 1 second faster from 0-100 km/h than its more comfortable brother. The very last CSL Coupes received an additional power increase from BMW to 206 hp.

The Scuderia Sportiva Colonia paid particular attention to these technically mature E9 coupés. The ravishing shape, the excellent chassis, the very good brakes and the powerful engine were - at the beginning of the 1970s - the measure of all things. The interior spoils the owner with luxurious materials, the seats in the CSL are very sporty with excellent lateral support and the individually framed VDO round instruments are still a feast for the eyes today. One car tester wrote so appropriately that if James Bond had been a German, he would have chosen a BMW E9 as his official car.

History of the BMW 3.0 CSL -SSC-583 offered here

This BMW E9 3.0 CSL with chassis no. 22754xx was first delivered to BMW Italia in Palazzolo on 7 June 1973. In 2011, this CSL travelled to France to its presumed second owner.  In 2017, the car was sold via a dealer to a BMW collector who only moved this car sporadically with 07 german collector number. Therefore, the current vehicle documents are still the last French registration documents**.**

** Condition of the BMW 3.0 CSL -SSC-583 offered here**

This original CSL, trimmed to look like a Batmobile, is a fascinating visual appearance. The paintwork of this CSL is not visually perfect, but the condition of the bodywork, in particular the sheet metal, is very, very good and recognisably rust-free. This coupé is flawless in all critical areas. The "matching" engine has excellent compression values and pulls up cleanly. The 5-speed ZF sports gearbox has been retrofitted and is in first-class condition. The suspension and brake system have recently been renewed. In addition to the Batmobil rear and roof spoilers, new 5-speed sports gearbox, the wiring for additional headlights at the front, dimmable reading lights, oil pressure and oil thermometer displays, roll bar, 4-point Sparco belts, special sports speedometer, dome strut, fire extinguisher and device for installation of a Tripmaster were also installed for sporty use.

This BMW currently still has its original French registration documents.

Summary

The CSL is simply an icon and a milestone in historic motorsport. It is a rare opportunity to acquire an original CSL that has been consistently equipped with motorsport accessories. This means that this vehicle can be used immediately both for fetching bread rolls on Sundays and for wild hunting on the Nürburgring.

By the way, if you don't like the colour or installed options, we currently have over 10 more BMW E9s for sale or in restoration, whereby every potential buyer can choose their own individual BMW original colour for the restoration vehicles, as well as the options to be installed. We are happy to provide you with a customised offer for each vehicle, including a list of options, on request.

Please note:

This offer is subject to change and subject to prior sale. The mileage and total mileage can no longer be traced simply because the speedometer has been changed. However, the compression values of the engine are fortunately excellent. If necessary, we will be happy to have a new valuation report drawn up. In Europe, transport in a closed trailer; we also organise container shipping for the rest of the world.
