The Audi 90 is an executive car that was made between 1986 and 1991 by German auto manufacturer Audi. The car was made as an upgrade of the Audi 80 and would come with more luxury features. In its entirety, the car used more parts from the 80 series. The powertrain used in the Audi 90 is the same technology that was applied in the Audi 80. However, there were few additions that would make the car different and unique. Most of these cars that were produced for the European market used the four-cylinder diesel inline engine.
History of the Audi 90
In 1986, Audi announced the release of the Audi 80 to the European market, but this time with few tweaks to the car to make it more acceptable in this market and to add luxurious features. This platform was meant to break the links with the B-series Volkswagen, which were coming up with the passats into the same market. With the previous version of the Audi 80, Audi would stand no better chance at competition in the presence of the Volkswagen B-series. So, the idea here was to release a unique model that would introduce new taste in the market. The new Typ 89 had a fully galvanised body and was designed with an aerodynamic look, making it the first mid-size sedan to have a zinc coated body, which would offer longevity and would prevent corrosion
The Audi 89 was sold worldwide as the Audi 80 or Audi 90 depending on the market. Basically, there were several things that were transferred from the previous version and this included the powertrain. Audi 90 also introduced the fuel injection system for some engines. Later, they upgraded the technology to favour some markets and offer better engines by designing and incorporating the inline four-cylinder engines, both diesel and petrol. The Audi 90 was generally made as a luxurious model meant to compete with other models in the same category like the Volkswagen passat. The Audi 90 was different visually in the sense that it came with full-width tai-lights and the headlights were high-beam. The grille was also different and the indicator, which were the most notable difference between Audi 90 and Audi 80, were placed on the bumpers in this model
