History of the ALPINA C2

ALPINA, founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen, carved out a reputation for engineering high-performance cars distinct from BMW’s standard models. In the late 1960s, ALPINA was active in touring car racing, and by 1971 took charge of the BMW 3.0CSL project. The C2, launched in the early 1980s, is based on the E30 BMW 3 Series and became a technical showcase, combining racing know-how with road usability. Production was limited to just around 75 units, making the C2 exceptionally rare even among ALPINA’s limited runs. Every step of its manufacture reflected ALPINA’s philosophy of individuality, performance, and meticulous attention to technical nuance.

Model history

The C2 model series started with the E30 platform, first as the C2 2.5, later as the C2 2.7. All variants received hallmark ALPINA upgrades: bespoke engine modifications, unique styling cues, and chassis refinement. While the C2 2.5 built on the 325i offering around 185 PS with increased responsiveness, the later C2 2.7 exploited a longer stroke M20 engine (often with a 325e crankshaft), producing up to 210 PS and more torque. Body styles ranged from 2- and 4-door saloons and cabriolets, to rare Touring and all-wheel-drive versions. Successors and related evolutions from ALPINA include even higher displacement E30-based models, but the C2 remains a core collector milestone.

Highlights of the ALPINA C2

• Enhanced M20 engines with Mahle pistons, unique ALPINA management and specific exhaust/ignition systems • Limited production: only about 75 C2 units built, with even fewer original cars surviving today • Optional Trockensumpfschmierung (dry sump lubrication) and close-ratio 5-speed transmission • Distinctive ALPINA touches: front air dam, spoiler, multi-spoke wheels, and proprietary interiors • Varied body styles: sedan, coupé, cabrio, rare Touring and 4WD editions • Earlier C2 2.5 versions are rarer than regular E30s, but the C2 2.7, especially in cabrio form, is one of the rarest ways to experience ALPINA's interpretation of the E30

Technical data

Special Editions and Rare Models

The C2 2.7 Cabrio stands out as one of the most exclusive E30 ALPINA models, combining open-top driving with ALPINA-tuned performance. Low production numbers—sometimes fewer than 20 cars for specific body styles—underscore true rarity. Fully documented, accident-free examples in original specification command particular interest from connoisseurs.

Weak Spots and Common Issues

Originality is critical: restoration quality and authenticity must be scrutinised due to high prevalence of conversions and non-genuine builds. Key focus areas include: • Matching ALPINA VIN/plaque and correct registration documents • Verified service history and Alpina conversion paperwork • Rust-prone E30 body areas—sills, jacking points, arches, strut mounts, windscreen surround • Avoidance of accident-damaged or poorly repaired donor cars • Correct ALPINA exterior and interior features (front spoiler, unique wheels, sport seats, Alpina steering wheel etc.) • Mechanical checks: healthy M20 engine (listen for startup noises, check for oil leaks, verify timing belt and water pump maintenance, check valve clearances) • C2 2.7 Cabrio: inspect soft-top, body flex and Watch out for structural issues Missing genuine Alpina interior parts can be costly and hard to find.

Engine and Performance, Transmission and Handling

ALPINA C2 models set themselves apart from their BMW E30 base with robust, high-revving inline-sixes and uniquely balanced chassis. The C2 2.5 delivers crisp, free-spinning power, reminiscent of the standard 325i but sharpened for more engagement. The C2 2.7 stands out with significantly higher torque, making for supremely elastic power delivery and superior real-world pace compared with both standard E30s and the more race-oriented M3. All C2s feature recalibrated suspension and ALPINA-specific wheels and tyres for enhanced grip and everyday usability.

The five-speed close-ratio gearbox (where fitted) makes for brisk acceleration and dynamic driving response, while the overall handling feels taut yet approachable. • ALPINA C2 2.5: 185 PS, 2.5-litre M20, available in various E30 body styles • ALPINA C2 2.7: 204–210 PS, 2.7-litre M20, especially rare as Cabrio or Touring • C2 2.7 Cabrio: among the least produced, open-top, 210 PS, prized for both collectability and driving thrills • All models: distinguished by ALPINA chassis tuning, body styling, and carefully selected mechanical upgrades

Interior, Comfort, Exterior and Design

Signature ALPINA additions set the C2 apart: multi-spoke 16" wheels, decorative pinstripe sets in blue/green/gold, bespoke front air dam and rear spoiler for improved aerodynamics, and discreet ALPINA badging. Interior customisations include ALPINA steering wheels, wood shift knobs, unique seat upholstery (often with Recaro or Scheel seats trimmed in classic Alpina fabrics) and model-specific dashboard instruments. Exclusive materials and colour schemes reflect ALPINA’s drive for individuality in every car. Special-order options included high-grade sound systems, climate control, electric sunroofs, and unique paint/trim combinations seldom seen on ordinary E30s.

Other relevant features

The dry sump lubrication available on some C2s showcases ALPINA’s racing technology applied to road cars. ALPINA always collaborated closely with BMW, meaning C2s benefited from both OEM reliability and specialised tuning. Original C2s are eligible for historic motorsport and classic car events across Europe.

Convertible versions require attention to top mechanisms and structural rigidity due to chassis flex.

Summary

The ALPINA C2 redefines the E30 formula by elevating performance and exclusivity to a new tier. Uniquely crafted in tiny numbers, perfectly blending discreet styling with serious engineering, the C2 is a high-water mark for enthusiasts demanding both daily usability and technical finesse. Authenticity, originality, and detailed documentation are paramount for buyers and collectors; in both supply and demand, our market data confirms unwavering focus on this singular ALPINA series.
