Description
In 1989, for the last year of production of the long-running “G series”, now joined by the newly born 964, Porsche decided to focus on the workhorse that had always been at the top of the wish list of Porsche enthusiasts of the time: the 911 3.3 Turbo, in this case with a cabriolet body. That year, an important innovation was introduced that improved the overall pleasure of driving the 911 Turbo: we are talking about the 5-speed gearbox with hydraulic clutch, the famous G50. Only 600 Turbo Cabriolets were produced for the United States, in addition to the 244 for the Rest Of the World, so we are faced with one of the most sought-after models and, among the Turbos, undoubtedly one of the most enchanting to drive. The close ratio of the 5-speed gearbox makes the drive more dynamic, lively and less nervous, also thanks to the engine developed for the American market equipped with a catalytic converter, which is more rounded and elastic, like the turbocharged engines of the contemporary era.
It costed about double that of a 911 Carrera 3.2 and being produced in a limited number (less than 900 units in the world) it was - and is - extremely exclusive; the 85.000 Dollars list price was justified by a rather rich equipment such as the electric soft-top, air conditioning, electrically adjustable seats, central locking, fog lights, rear fog lights, alarm device and 16-inch Fuchs rims. In addition, this example, delivered in 1989, had the following extra options on request:
018 sport steering wheel with elevated hub (30mm)
158 Radio Blaupunkt Reno
220 limited slip differential
243 shorter shifter lever
494 Amplifier system
975 Luggage boot trim with velour carpet
With 282 horsepower, the engine is generous, always ready, with a torque curve (377Nm) well distributed and usable thanks to the aforementioned G50 gearbox; the Turbo Cabrio recipe is completed by the usual Brembo braking system, together with the set-up which, in this last year of production, mounted 18mm anti-roll bars at the front and 22mm at the rear.
After the first 30 years spent in the United States, this example arrived in Europe - converted externally with RoW specifications - and was purchased by the current owner who used it for short trips covering no more than 5000km, for a total of approximately 110,000km (70,000 miles).
The car is in excellent condition: bodywork refreshed - very well - before arriving in Italy, front seats recently renewed, while the rest of the interior is preserved. The hood was most likely replaced by the previous owner (being as good as new), and the original hood cover was just purchased. The last service was carried out at the Porsche Latina Centre (Marrocco) and no special work is required.
ASI registered car, with Italian license plate and documents. It can be seen by appointment in Bologna.
