This 1939 Hudson Business Six Series 98 Cab Pickup “Big Boy” is an exceptionally rare pre-war American pickup with remarkable history, elegant styling and strong collector appeal.
According to the available documentation, Hudson produced only 640 trucks and commercial vehicles in 1939. The exact production number of the “Big Boy” pickups is unknown; however, the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club reports only three known surviving 1939 “Big Boys”, including this vehicle.
The Hudson is powered by an inline six-cylinder engine with 202 cu in / 3,310 cc. A particularly attractive feature is the rare Twin-H-Power setup with dual carburettors. The engine is paired with a 3-speed column-shift transmission with overdrive, giving the pickup genuine pre-war character combined with remarkably usable drivability.
The vehicle is finished in Light Orchid and features a light brown interior, body-coloured dashboard, Hudson Heater, modern radial tyres, original-style hubcaps, seat belts, 12-volt conversion and the characteristic spare wheel mounted on the pickup bed.
The “Big Boy” was comprehensively restored in 1989 by Soneff’s Master Garage and remained part of the renowned Hudson collection of John Soneff, an internationally respected Hudson specialist, until 2013. After its relocation to Austria, the vehicle was mechanically inspected, prepared and approved for Austrian road use.
The available condition and valuation report classifies the vehicle as condition grade 2. Bodywork, interior, engine bay and mechanical condition are described as very good.
An exceptional pre-war pickup for collectors, drivers and enthusiasts of rare American commercial vehicles – historically significant, technically appealing and visually unmistakable.
