****1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud SC10 by James Young of Bromley. Finished in the original colours of Light Grey over Lavender Grey which suit the lines of the car extremely well, interestingly it was one of only two to be painted in this livery, the other being the 1955 Earls Court Motor Show car. James Young only built 24 cars to design SC10 (21 RHD /and 3 LHD – as shown in Davide Bassoli’s book “Every Cloud has a Silver Lining” page 179), and only a few of these cars have the small fins on the rear wings. SWA66 is number 5 in the series of JY coach-built cars. The interior is trimmed in Beige hide with matching carpets, the cabin is in exceptional condition and as with most James Young cars only the most beautifully figured burr walnut has been used. The car has been maintained to an extremely high standard, recent work has included a new radiator, new stainless steel exhaust, period seatbelts, a new water pump, new whitewall tyres and a reconditioned rear axle and differential being fitted, the choice was made to fit a Silver Cloud 3 differential with higher ratios which allows this car to cruise happily at motorway speeds. The history file includes MOT test certificates back to the 1970's as well as tax discs going back to the same era. This must be one of the very finest examples of a coach built Silver Cloud on the market today. Perfect for showing and equally suited to long distance touring.
James Young produced just 24 of the SC10 design (21 RHD & 3 LHD) on the Silver Cloud (SC = Silver Cloud, 10 = 4-door saloon) with their distinctive square push buttons on the door handles, only some of the SC10 designed cars had discreet fins on the top of the rear wings. The SC10 made its debut appearance at the 1955 Earls Court Show with the 2nd car produced to that design being on the Stand (SWA52 later owned by S. McCrudden) & in 1956 LSYB114 (with fins & later owned by A. Rueff) was displayed at the Paris Salon. Each Rolls-Royce that James Young bodied was issued with detailed instructions on the care of the bodywork & even on how to close the doors “In closing a door it must be closed by the door handle and not by the outside press button”. In 1956 the price of standard Silver Cloud was £5,000 but if you wanted a SC10 it would cost you £7,134 – in comparison at auction with a reserve of £5,500 was Bishops Green House – 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3 reception rooms and a 4 car garage set in 13 acres, you could also buy a pair of thatched cottages set in 22 acres for £2,000! Wealthy and discerning owners of the other SC10 cars included - Miss Nora Hardy MacCaw of Monaco (she also owned LALC26), Samuel McCrudden & Co. Ltd. (Linen Weavers of Eire) & later owned by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics; George Hoy Booth better known as George Formby; F. E. F. Blythe Chemical Magnate of Cheshire; A. K. Barbee who with his twin Stanley & their brother Cecil owned Coca-Cola Bottling Company in L.A.; André Rueff - Swiss Banker & racehorse owner and a certain Irving Geist – Manhattan Blouse Manufacturer whose licence plate was NYC 1.
