The Morris Mini Cooper S
Designed by Alec Issigonis and launched in 1959 the original BMC Mini was an instant hit. Initially designed as a 'people's car' the Mini was also the lovechild of many celebrities and even rockstars. Issigonis' friend John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company saw the potential of the Mini platform for competition. Issigonis initially never planned on a competition version of the Mini but after Cooper insisted on the potential of the car, the Mini Cooper was eventually born. The Austin and Morris Mini Cooper debuted in September 1961.
An even more purposeful Mini Cooper was developed and released in 1963; the Cooper S was born. Featuring a 1071 cc engine, larger front disc brakes, a steel crankshaft and strengthened bottom end to manage the increased horsepower. Around 4000 Cooper S cars of this version were sold until the model was updated in August 1964. Two additional S models were constructed with the intention of circuit racing in the under 1,000 cc and under 1,300 cc classes. These versions were also offered to the public for road use. The 1275 cc Cooper S model being the most popular one, and would be produced until the end of 1971.
This Morris Mini Cooper S 1275 MKI
The car on offer here is a 1965 Morris Mini Cooper S 1275, and was commissioned from new to Italy. On the 6th of December 1965 Lambro Motor srl. in Milan took delivery of the car, and sold it to Mr. Emilio Pozzoli on the 25th of February in 1966. The car has seen various Italian owners ever since, which are all known and documented. The car has resided it's entire life in Italy and is fully matching numbers and finished in its original color scheme of Tartan red over a red interior and remains in 'dead-stock' condition as it was delivered back in 1965. The car has been meticulously restored a couple of years ago and has been used very sparingly ever since. The overhauled engine is very torquey and extremely fast, during the restoration the gearbox has been overhauled as well, hence showing no signs of any cracky synchros whatsoever. The close-ratio gearbox fits the competition-intended engine like a glove and makes for a tremendously potent Mini.
This being a 1965 car, it is one of the few cars to have been delivered with the desirable 'hydrolatic' suspension setup. This setup was used to increase comfort, decrease body roll and make for a more controlled contact patch of the tires. This system was found to be too expensive by BMC, so they opted for the conventional rubber suspension setup from 1971 onwards.
The MKI Cooper S is the halo version of the classic Mini, with this being the ultimate version; the 1275. The competition pedigree, the limited production numbers and the true sensation it is to drive... No wonder prices are continuously on the rise when occasionally one is publicly offered for sale. With original unadulterated examples becoming scarcer and scarcer, this is a great opportunity to acquire an original MKI Cooper S at a very competitive price.
