1970 | Mercedes-Benz 280 SL

The W 113 is a two-seat convertible with a folding roof, introduced by Mercedes-Benz at the Geneva Auto Show in March 1963. It was nicknamed Pagoda because of its additional, inwardly curved hardtop.

The goal in the design development under the direction of Paul Bracq was to clearly differentiate itself from the predecessor and to strive for a more "masculine" appearance. Smooth surfaces, plenty of storage space, and the absence of decorative elements are the Pagoden-SL's distinguishing features.

The "Pagode" was the first SL to introduce extensive safety measures.

Since its base is the "Heckflosse" W 111 floor pan with a 30 cm shorter wheelbase, the SL also has a stiff passenger cell and crumple zones, easily deformable front and rear segments.

The interior is toned down, like the sedan, with no harsh edges or corners.

Safety belts were available as an option, as they were with the previous model.

The suspension with ball-travel steering and rear swing-axle was also taken from the W 111 sedan.

In 1968, the 250 SL was replaced by the 280 SL with the M 130 engine, which had 170 hp (125 kW) and more torque, and now had equal cylinder spacing.

The Mercedes 280SL "Pagoda" offered here is a German vehicle with a coveted 4-speed manual transmission.

The current owner is the second owner of the car and has had it since the mid-1970s, it was registered to his company in Luxembourg in the meantime, but now he has German papers again.

The mileage is 34,149 and is readable.

In 2014 suffered the car damage, after which the entire vehicle was restored.

The bodywork was carried out, documented, and completed at the Auto Kromm company in Osthofen for a six-figure amount in the original configuration of the time. The invoices for this are, of course, available.

In 2023, the engine was completely overhauled for a mid-five-digit amount at Autohaus Mercedes Birkelbach GmbH, which is a Mercedes Classic Center. The invoice for this is also available.

There is a current valuation report that gives the Mercedes a grade of 1.
