Description

The BMW 3.0 CSL was built in collaboration with Alpina as a racing homologation.

By using aluminum doors, tailgate, and hood. Including the  removal of insulation material among other things, the weight was significantly reduced. Lightweight Scheel bucket seats were also fitted.

The introduction of the BMW 3.0 CSL took place a year before the founding of BMW Motorsport GmbH in 1972, and it is therefore no coincidence that the Leichtbau Coupé with its six-cylinder M30 engine was very successful in the European Touring Car Championship in the years that followed.

The old CSL is above all brutal, authentic, and raw. It is based on the 2800 CS, a large Coupe introduced in 1968. Construction was outsourced to Karmann. The CS was perfectly suited for participation in the European Touring Car Championship, as proven by Alpina, which was very successful with drivers such as Niki Lauda, James Hunt, and Jacky Ickx. Schnitzer Motorsport also fielded the CS, with which John Fitzpatrick won the 6 Hours of Nürburgring in 1972. The starting grid at the time also featured cars such as the Ford Capri 2600 RS and the Porsche 911 S and Carrera RSR. These were not types to be handled with kid gloves, but unfiltered and tricky cannons that demanded vehicle control of the very highest level.

Coinciding with its racing debut, the street version of the 3.0 CSL became a reality. By offering a comfort package, BMW made most civilian versions slightly less brutal than the car used for homologation.

Our CSL was delivered new in Verona, Italy, on May 29, 1973, in the color Verona Red.

In 1999 the car was brought to the Netherlands by a restoration company and they continued working on the impressive restoration until 2003. Since its first Dutch registration in 2003, this CSL has had only one Dutch owner and has covered a limited number of kilometers. The restoration took place quite some time ago, but the condition of this E9 can still be described as impressive. It remains in excellent condition both visually and technically and is equipped with the sought-after 200 hp M30 3.0 Injection inline six-cylinder engine. Partly due to the recent BMW Birth Certificate, the major service, being fully matching numbers, and being one of the 152 LHDs built in 1973, this CSL is a unique sight.

It is equipped with the Comfort Package (City Package), meaning it features glass windows all around with rear window heating, electric rear windows, chrome front and rear bumpers, a tool kit, and enhanced sound insulation. This makes it more suitable for use on public roads. The CSL is still equipped with the aluminium doors, bonnet, and boot lid. If you do not prefer the look of the comfort package, it is easy to convert the CSL to the looks without this package (see the last photo for an example).

The BMW comes with Dutch registration documents, the original 14-inch Alpina wheels and some spare parts.
