Citroen 2CV 4×4 Sahara
This Citroën 2CV or 'Ugly Duck' has two engines and four-wheel drive.
The rear engine, located in the trunk, is mounted backwards and the gearboxes are linked by rods. One of the engines can be switched off, for example to save fuel.
This 'Sahara' model, introduced in 1958, is intended for expeditions in the French colonies, where four-wheel drive is necessary. Since Citroën does not have an engine that is powerful enough for four-wheel drive, it opts for two coupled engines. Despite the displacement of only 425 cc per engine, off-road performance is decent.
Production is limited to 694 units, as the car is not intended for general use. Outside the colonies, the Sahara is widely used in Spain and the Swiss postal services; reportedly even two Sahara ducks have been used by Rijkswaterstaat. As far as is known, there are about 25 copies left worldwide.
The model presented here came in Old English White color and has a red striped interior. The engine runs well, as does the shift mechanism. The car has a gray vinyl roof which has been used. This beautiful Sahara CV2 has French papers. Very rare and hard to find.
