The Audi S6 Plus Avant is regarded as one of the first true performance models from the then quattro GmbH and marks a turning point in the brand’s history. This example, built in 1996, is one of only 855 Avant versions produced, representing a rare combination of understatement and V8 performance. With its high-revving 4.2-liter V8 producing 326 hp, the S6 Plus was the most powerful production Audi of its time. The vehicle offered here presents itself with extensive equipment, traceable updates, and an honest condition description.
In the mid-1990s, Audi began redefining its sporty identity. Inspired by BMW’s M GmbH, quattro GmbH—founded in 1983 and originally responsible for special models and customizations—gradually developed independent high-performance vehicles. The Audi S6 Plus, introduced in 1996 at the Geneva Motor Show, marked a milestone: for the first time, quattro GmbH officially acted as a vehicle manufacturer.
Technically, the S6 Plus was based on the well-known C4 S6 but significantly revised. Its centerpiece was the further developed 4.2-liter V8 (engine code AHK), producing around 326 hp and reaching impressive engine speeds of up to approximately 7,000 rpm. This positioned the S6 Plus not only above the regular S6 but also as a precursor to later RS models. Combined with permanent all-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, it offered both performance and everyday usability.
Production lasted just over a year, with a total of 952 units built—855 Avant and only 97 sedans. This low production number makes the S6 Plus one of the rarest Audi production models of the 1990s.
The S6 Plus differs only subtly from the regular S6, making it a classic “understatement” vehicle. Distinctive features include exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in a 6-spoke design, black anodized trim, and specific S6 Plus badges at the front and rear. Details such as the black grille surround and restrained lines give the car a unique presence.
The condition is described honestly: the vehicle is not accident-free, although details regarding the extent or timing of any damage are not documented. Overall, it presents as a used but well-maintained classic with appropriate patina.
The interior features a sporty-luxurious specification typical of the S6 Plus. Particularly notable is the combination of blue Alcantara upholstery and carbon trim, giving the cabin a distinctive period character. Additional features include power windows, sunroof, electric mirrors, and comfort elements such as sun blinds.
The instrument cluster with a speedometer up to 300 km/h and the three-spoke sports steering wheel emphasize the car’s sporting intent. Age-related wear is to be expected, though detailed condition notes are not fully documented.
The Avant is powered by the well-known 4.2-liter V8 with 326 hp, delivering power via permanent quattro all-wheel drive.
Important work has recently been carried out: all four brakes have been replaced, and new tires are available but still need to be mounted. Additionally, an original radio without pixel defects, a new trunk cover, and a new rear sunblind have been installed.
At the same time, some known issues should be considered. One xenon bulb works intermittently, and the plastic accelerator pedal cover is damaged (replacement included). No service has been carried out in the past two years, which should be factored into future maintenance planning.
The vehicle was first registered in July 1996 and currently shows approximately 233,000 kilometers. The number of previous owners is not clearly documented. Overall, the history suggests a regularly used vehicle rather than a preserved collector’s item.
A valid inspection (Pickerl) is in place until July 2026, allowing current road use. Detailed service records are not fully available and should be reviewed individually. No service has been performed in the past two years. During a tire change, it was noted that one wheel had been welded on the inner side.
The Audi S6 Plus Avant is one of those vehicles whose significance becomes clearer over time. As one of the first models from quattro GmbH, it marks the beginning of a development that later culminated in the RS models. With its limited production, charismatic V8, and understated appearance, it is now considered an underrated classic of the 1990s.
This example offers an honest basis: partially updated technically, with visible signs of use and clearly stated weaknesses. For enthusiasts, it presents an opportunity to acquire a rare model with development potential—whether for further refinement or as a characterful youngtimer for regular use.
The S6 Plus is one of those quiet heroes. No big RS badge, no extroverted appearance—except perhaps the color—and yet it already contains everything that later made Audi great. Especially as an Avant, it feels like a wolf in a tailored suit. This example doesn’t tell a perfect story, but an honest one—and that is exactly what makes it appealing.
