Description

Introduced in 1955, the 190 SL was conceived as a more accessible companion to the legendary 300 SL, sharing much of its visual DNA while offering a more relaxed and approachable character. Its long bonnet, delicate chrome detailing, upright grille and beautifully proportioned roadster body have ensured its place as one of Mercedes-Benz's most recognisable and desirable classics.

At its heart is Mercedes-Benz's 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Rather than being about outright speed, the 190 SL is about the enjoyment of driving. The characterful engine, precise controls and wonderfully light steering making it ideally suited to leisurely country-road journeys and continental touring.

The cabin is every bit as charming as the exterior. The beautifully detailed dashboard, large steering wheel, chrome instrumentation and generous use of period materials create an environment that feels both wonderfully authentic and unmistakably Mercedes-Benz.

The car presented here is specified in DB190 Graphite Grey over a red leather interior and was delivered in August of 1961 to the USA. Little is known about the cars time in the US, but in 2018 the car made its way to the UK. Although a non-matching number example, with the engine having been replaced, the car presents an ideal opportunity to own a 190 SL that can be used and enjoyed without the worries of a completely restored example.

Today, the 190 SL occupies a particularly interesting position within the classic Mercedes-Benz market. It offers much of the visual presence and craftsmanship associated with the marque's more exotic cars, while remaining comparatively easy to enjoy and use. It is equally at home parked outside a grand hotel, travelling along a coastal road or simply being enjoyed on a sunny Sunday morning.

Due to undergo comprehensive service and maintenance as part of the sale at the hands of the expert Hilton & Moss team, this 190 SL represents an opportunity to acquire a genuinely special Mercedes-Benz and a car that combines timeless elegance, open-air motoring and the enduring quality for which the three-pointed star has become renowned.
