It is highly likely that this is the finest right-hand drive W116 out there. This 450SEL has covered just 25k miles from new and remains in original, unrestored condition.
Supplied new in September 1979 to a Leonard Handy of Bristol, although it quickly changed hands in the November of that year to a William Mace, also of Bristol. Mace kept the car 26 years, though he evidently doted upon it and only used it for special occasions, as by the time he parted company the car had only covered 13,600 miles from new. It tells us something that, from the history file, there is a letter, from MB dealer Normand of Bristol, thanking Mace for lending the car to them for the launch of the W140 S-Class in late 1991.
Since then, the car has been in collector ownership. It was featured in Classics Monthly magazine in 2006, and the car took part in the 2006 Mercedes-Benz Classic Days Rally in Salzburg. So, it’s good to know that the car has covered more miles in recent years than in its early life. Today the mileage stands at 25,818 miles.
The history file shows that the car received a full Dinitrol rust-proofing treatment in 2006 and has been well serviced and looked after in recent years.
It is so rare to find a W116, or indeed any car of this age, which still has the brightness and freshness of new. The bodywork is in superb condition; the brightwork is exceptional. The interior has absolutely no UV damaged/fading or wear, with all the touchpoints tell the story of a car that has only covered 25k miles from new. It runs beautifully and drives like a new 450SEL.
In the last ten years we have sold only two exceptional 116s, which goes to show how rare collector-quality examples of the first S-Class are. This, however, is the best we have seen, and it’s a 450SEL, the top model below the exotic 6.9.
You simply could not restore a W116 to this standard, even if you could find all the parts, for several times the price of this car. An unrepeatable car that’s perfect for the collector.
