In fact, in 1977 Mercedes-Benz unveiled the first estate car it had produced itself in the post-war era at the IAA in Frankfurt: the so-called ‘T-Model’, derived from the saloons of the W 123 series. Although estate cars had been produced in small batches from various model ranges, Mercedes-Benz had previously supplied only the chassis for these. The majority of the bodywork was supplied by the manufacturers Binz and Miesen. These were mostly ambulances and hearses. However, the T-Model (S 123) was on the market from 1978 to 1985. ‘T’ stood for ‘Transport’ and ‘Tourism’, as the advertising emphasised. Although it was initially quite a bit more expensive than the saloon, its graceful silhouette meant it quickly attained the same prestige as the saloons.
Our Mercedes-Benz 200 T is now in its third ownership. Whilst the odometer reads 200,000 km, the classic car was fitted with an original replacement engine at 116,000 km. It is not an elegant show car; its understated paintwork and simple interior are more a testament to economy. There are plenty of service invoices available, and the records have been complete since 2018. A few bodywork repairs that still need to be carried out are included in the price.
