The Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 TI:
In June 1962 Alfa Romeo launched the first of several models based on the 105 series architecture – known as the Giulia. A boxy 4-door sedan, that was remarkably well equipped for a family production car. A sturdy 1570 cc 4 cylinder with twin overhead camshafts mated to a twin-choked, down-draft SOLEX 33 PAIA 7 carburettor producing a respectable 91 hp – unheard of performance for a “run-of-the-mill” family car in the early 1960’s!
By early 1964, Alfa updated its popular Giulia by offering some notable changes. The most prominent being Dunlop disc brakes all round with a brake servo as well as a 5-speed manual transmission known as “floorshift” (the early Giulia’s had the gearstick mounted at the column). The early Giulia’s are widely considered to being the prettiest of the entire Giulia line-up, with a plethora of intricate details that were subdued on the later models. The c-shape chrome surrounds of the taillights, the lustrous side indicator lights, the intricate front grille, the quirky strip speedometer, lavishly equipped seating – to name but a few.
This Giulia 1600 TI:
The motorcar on offer here, chassis no. AR450626, was originally consigned to Rome on the 25th of November 1964 under reg. number ROMA786141. The car was ordered by and registered to “Istituto per lo Sviluppo delle Attività”, the Italian ministry for business development – then located on the Via Sardegna in Rome for a new price of 1.570.000 Lires.
The original registration documents (Foglio Complementare as well as the Libretto) indicate an uninterrupted history from new – extremely unusual for cars of this age. It is believed the car stayed in the vicinity of Rome throughout its entire life until 2016, where it was registered to Valentina Dagna of Milan. The car’s beautiful original specification is Grigio Grafite over Marrone leatherette, the specification the car is presented in today. It is noteworthy that the interior is believed to still be largely original, boasting amazing patina with some light signs wear of (almost 60 years) of use. Some years ago a full restoration has been undertaken, which evidently contained aesthetical as well as mechanical recommissioning works. The quality of this restoration is certified by the accompanied ASI Oro certification in July 2016 (registered under N. 44801), which also states the car is matching numbers throughout.
We can approve the car drives as good as it looks, firing up without hesitation after the flick of the key. The gearbox shows absolutely no signs of crunching synchro’s and the engine pulls very nicely indeed. Correct and consistent panel gaps and spot welds show a truthful body throughout. The four Michelin XAS tires are still in as near as new condition - ready for plenty of miles!
All original accessories are still with the car under which the original jack, positioned correctly in the engine compartment - even the original window sticker is still in place! The history file of the Giulia boasts all original documentation including the original registration documents, Foglio Complementare, original owner’s manual, ASI Oro certificate as well as an elaborate ASI report concerning technical specifications. Very rarely are Giulia’s offered in this condition boasting such crystal clear provenance and elaborate documentation. Another noteworthy detail is that the original window sticker is still in place (as is all original glass around the car) - something rarely seen on cars of this age.
A simply stunning Giulia of the sought-after “early” configuration. An immaculate motorcar which is eminently usable and offers driving pleasure of the highest order – with seating for the entire family that is! An opportunity not to be missed.
