Description

Lancia Aurelia as Coupé, Spider and Convertible

In 1951, one year after the sedan, the Lancia Aurelia B20 GT made its debut; a coupé with which

Lancia would consolidate its place among the most innovative automobile manufacturers. The breathtaking design was created at Carozzeria Ghia, but was substantially revised by Pininfarina a short time later and also hand-built there. In addition to various coupé and convertible special bodies based on the Aurelia sedans, it was this sports car, built for more than seven years as a closed and open two-door, that continued the dynamic tradition of the Lancia brand after the Second World War. Technically, the new coupé shared its platform with the B21 sedan. In the sports car, the V6 engine featured a higher compression ratio, two Weber carburettors and an output of 75 hp. The car weighed just 1,000 kilograms and reached a top speed of 160 km/h. For comparison: the Porsche 356 in the 1300 version managed

to reach a top speed of 145 km/h in 1951. Designed as a classic 2+2-seater, the Lancia Aurelia could accommodate four adults, at least over short distances. But it saw itself much more as a Gran Turismo, the first touring sports car to bear the designation GT.

After 500 examples had been built, a quite remarkable number at the time, the

second series of the coupé followed in 1952, now with 80 hp as well as some visual modifications and a

lowered chassis. Another year later, the third generation was launched:

In popular parlance, the Aurelia finally became the Aurelia—the Lancia par excellence. The shapes appeared even more dynamic, yet at the same time more elegant, and the output of the now 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine increased to 118 hp. The name also changed: Lancia Aurelia B20 2500 GT. The top speed of 185 km/h can probably only be properly interpreted when the comparative data of the most important competitor from Germany are once again provided: the Porsche 356 1500 Super reached a top speed of 175 km/h. In the fourth series, the coupé then received a De Dion rear axle. Result: the formerly slightly oversteering handling became more neutral. An interesting detail by the way:

Famous coachbuilders such as Bertone were suppliers to Pininfarina during this period. Numerous other specialists contributed technical refinements that made it possible to increase the output to 132 hp, for example through the Weber twin-carburettor system. Two further series followed in the years afterwards, less sporty but somewhat more luxurious and with greater torque.

In return, a third body variant was added to the Aurelia range in 1954: the B24 Spider. It made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show. Once again, Pininfarina was responsible for the design. The two-seater became one of the most fascinating open sports cars of the 1950s. Originally planned only for the American market, which is why it was also often called the America Spider. During its only year of production, just 240 vehicles were produced, 59 of them right-hand-drive. Throughout the entire production period of the Aurelia, the Lancia coupés and Spiders celebrated numerous successes in motorsport. The Italian sports cars took part in all the major classic races, the Mille Miglia, the Carrera Panamericana, the Targa Florio and the Monte Carlo Rally. And as in 1953 after the Panamericana, and in 1954 after the Monte and Mille Miglia, they crossed the finish line as winners.

In the 1950s, elegance and sportiness merged into a combination that made the Turin automaker world-famous. The Lancia style produced such memorable models as the Aurelia B20 GT, a sedan with mechanics that were both refined and powerful, from which the Aurelia B24 Spider was later developed.

In 1954, Pinin Farina –  who had already worked on the design of the  Aurelia Gran Turismo – was commissioned to “clothe” the mechanics of the B20. The result: an equally elegant Spider that immediately became a great success on the US market due to its lines. By shortening the chassis of the 4th-series B20 and making a few changes to the 6-cylinder engine with 2,451cm3, necessary only so that it would fit beneath a significantly lower bonnet, one of the most beautiful Spiders of all time was created.

The Aurelia B24 Spider was built only 240 times in 1955: 59 of them were right-hand-drive vehicles and 181 left-hand-drive vehicles (the latter were designated “B24S”, with “S” standing for “sinistra”, meaning “left”).

Characteristic features of this Spider are the long air intake opening on the bonnet and the “wing-shaped” bumpers extending to the left and right of the classic radiator shield, the Lancia emblem par excellence. The car has a very original layout: the passenger compartment is located practically exactly midway between the long luggage compartment and the bonnet. The elegant B24 Spider also catches the eye with its deep doors, which leave room for the high entry sill enhanced by a chrome strip. The purist design is further emphasised by the absence of exterior door handles. On the dashboard: three circular instruments; a large speedometer in the centre above the steering column. Another wonderful detail: the beautiful wooden steering wheel with its three aluminium spokes.
