Description

About this MG B
---------------

The MGB was first introduced in 1962 at the Earls Court Motor Show and it was to become Britain's best selling medium sized sports car of all time. Brought in to replace the already successful MGA, this all new unitary construction 2-seater was powered by a 1798cc version of the BMC B series engine, which went on to power MGB & MGB GT models virtually unchanged (except for a 5 bearing crankshaft instead of 3 from 1964) for another 18 years. This engine was coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox with an optional Overdrive on 3rd and 4th gears, suspension was by Coil Spring and Wishbones at the front and semi elliptic Leaf Springs at the rear, with Lever Arm Dampers all round. Front Disc Brakes were standard and it has Rack & Pinion Steering.
The MGB range was finally discontinued in 1980, but the popularity of the MGB remains tremendous, with the model being well catered for by clubs and parts manufacturers.

This lovely MK1 'Pull Door Handle' MGB - Chassis no: G-HN3/44051 and Engine No: 18GA-RU-H/13003 is according to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a 'Matching Numbers' car and was built in Abingdon between 4th & 6th August 1964, despatched on 10th August 1964 to University Motors in London and we believe it was one of their demonstrators until being sold and registered to its first owner in London on 23rd June 1965 with the number plate: EYM 296C.

It is finished in its original colour of Tartan Red with Black Leather seats piped in Red, Red carpets Black Vinyl 'pack-away' Hood, Wire Wheels, Heater, Anti-Roll Bar and Overdrive.

This car was in the previous ownership for 21 years but off the road in storage for almost 15 years during that time. It has certainly seen a high degree of cherished upkeep over its lifetime by its former keepers - only two in the last 32 years and 8 in total - and it has been periodically treated to sympathetic but useful upgrades and a restoration by a Bob Arkle between the spring of 1986 to the summer of 1988 and there is a plate riveted to the front panel in the engine bay to this effect

It was only taken out of storage in late 2021 and given to MG specialist LMG Kent Ltd and just over £2,300 was spent with them on various works re-commissioning the car.

This is a very good, straight and honest early MGB, albeit the paintwork could be better, the carpets are the originals and consequently a little worn and faded and the black vinyl soft top is not new, but perfectly serviceable, the chrome-work on the car is very good, as are the Chrome Wire Wheels, the leather seats have been recovered at some point and are in very nice condition and mechanically it is extremely good. We are pretty sure that its original 1798cc 3 Bearing crankshaft Engine has been rebuilt and the Gearbox and Overdrive function as they should and it drives very nicely.

It was also MOT'd in April 2022 with No advisories.

It does come with its original Steering Wheel which is quite rare plus a classic Pye Radio/Cassette player which works, an MG Car Cover, a full black vinyl Tonneau cover, Jack & Wheelbrace and a pretty good history file dating back to the early 1990's including invoices and MOT certificates and its BMIHT Heritage Certificate.

Overall, this is a great car that you can get into and drive and enjoy and it does look very presentable as it is, but it would benefit from some paint rectification if you want to make it perfect.

This is a chance to buy a good early 'pull door handle' MGB at a good price and prices are still on the up!

The car is clear on all HPi registers and upon sale it will come with a pre-sales service + our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty and it is ULEZ and Road Tax free!

We are just in the process of carrying out our full preparation of the car and it should be available to view and test drive very shortly.

Car on display @ our showrooms in Mortlake, SW London.
