On March 3rd 1934 the Citroen Type 7 was presented to dealers and it created an absolute sensation. Created in just 13 months by ‘genius’ designer André Lefèbvre who had been recruited from Renault early in 1933 to work on the Traction Avant’ project, the new car had a unibody (without separate chassis), front-wheel drive, independently sprung front wheels, torsion bar suspension, hydraulic brakes and rubber motor mounts for the engine. The car was so advanced for its time, introducing design elements which only became standard on other makes decades later. It was much lower on the roads than its contemporaries, had no running boards and provided superb passenger comfort. The road-holding and the way the power was transferred to the road via the front wheels was revolutionary at the time. An iconic car of the 20th Century, the Traction Avant remained in production for 23 years.

The model began as a short bodied 1303cc 7HP car, later enlarged to 1629cc. For the Paris Motor Show in October 1934, Citroën presented the 'big' body with a 1911 cc engine - the type we know today as the 'Normale' or 'Large'. This body was 12 cm wider and 20 cm longer than the smaller one with similar technical specifications. The small body became known as the 'Légère'. Here in the UK the rising demand for vehicles and the imposition of the ‘McKenna duties' on imported vehicles led André Citroën to set up an assembly plant to manufacture cars for the British domestic and Empire (later Commonwealth) markets where right hand drive cars were the norm. The Citroën factory in the Slough Trading Estate was opened in 1926 and was to continue building cars until 1965 when the operation became dedicated to sales and marketing. Not only were the cars built with right hand drive steering, they were frequently renamed and equipped with extras not fitted to the domestic market vehicles.Such is the case with our splendid 1953 ‘Light 15' right hand drive example. Exported to New Zealand when new, the car features the wooden dash, leather seating and extra chrome which were a feature of the Slough-Built RHD Tractions.

We have three large files of history spanning 7 decades. These feature the purchase and registration documents from New Zealand, instruction book, an amazing documented service and repair history, as well as ownership details. Re-imported to England in 1990 it was for a time owned by the director of legendary Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason's ‘Action Ten Tenths' car collection used in film and TV work. Having purchased the car in 2005 its English owner took the car over to France and there is a wealth of invoices covering repairs and maintenance whilst in France. Its last UK registration mark 342 YHN will now be re-allocated to the car now it is back in the UK.

Previous owners have been active members of the Traction Owner's Club and the documentation reveals that the car has befitted from attention by the top marque specialist and experts. Most recently the car had a reconditioned gearbox fitted and there is a large quantity of valuable spares which come with the car. The last owner invested in a set of correct Michelin X tyres and the ride, handling and cornering ability surpass anything we've encountered from this era. The car is very well presented and whilst there are a few minor paintwork blemishes after many years in France, this remains one of the finest Traction Avant models we've owned.
