Description

Comfort, Technology, Character – the 1985 Citroën CX 2.5 GTI

A Citroën is avant-garde by nature. In the 1970s, that philosophy was embodied in the CX. When it was unveiled in the summer of 1974, the model amounted to nothing less than a reinvention of the saloon car: aerodynamic, with a flowing roofline and a carefully sculpted Kamm tail. Its drag coefficient was remarkable by the standards of the time, as was the generous interior space – made possible by the transversely mounted engine.

Once on the move in a CX, one enjoys a level of smoothness and ride comfort that, in this class, was available only from Citroën. The famous, marque-typical hydropneumatic suspension, together with the entire drivetrain, is mounted on a subframe in order to isolate the bodyshell from vibrations and noise. The driver is greeted by a futuristic interior with magnifying speedometer and control satellites, allowing most functions to be operated without removing one’s hands from the steering wheel. Steering itself feels like a new experience on this flying carpet: Citroën’s power assistance is not only speed-sensitive, it also constantly returns the front wheels to the straight-ahead position, resulting in exceptional stability, particularly on motorways.

Especially popular with Swiss customers was the fuel-injected GTi. Our example was first registered by its original owner in October 1985 in Leuggern, in the canton of Aargau. After seven years of use, it was deregistered in December 1992 and presented in January 1993 by its second owner in Full-Reuenthal, showing just over 115,600 kilometres on the odometer. The second owner retained the CX until 2019, though without re-registering it and driving it only occasionally. The current owner acquired the car in 2019. Today, this beautifully preserved CX presents itself in a rust-free, unwelded condition, with still only 133,000 kilometres covered. The paintwork in Gris Espadon is believed to be largely original, with the exception of the bonnet. The GTi also retains its original alloy wheels.

< From 2019 onwards, numerous components have been renewed or overhauled, including ignition coils, hoses, the water and fuel pumps, brakes, gaiters, steering and hydraulic components, clutch, seals, fuel tank and tyres, all supported by comprehensive documentation. In addition, the CX has received a new radiator and a full service. A brand-new battery completes the picture for this French classic, which has just passed inspection and is now ready for any European journey in the year ahead.
