The Citroën CX Prestige offered here is one of the rarest variants of the legendary CX model range. As an early Series 1 flat-roof model, it combines the extended wheelbase with the elegant roofline of the original saloon – a combination that was produced for only a relatively short period. The vehicle was first registered in Southern France in 1976, has a traceable history and underwent an extensive restoration in 2016/2017. The restoration work, valued at around €20,000, together with regular maintenance by renowned Citroën specialists, highlights the exceptional condition of this remarkable classic.
When Citroën presented the CX in 1974, it had the difficult task of following in the footsteps of the revolutionary DS. Replacing such an iconic predecessor was an enormous challenge. Instead of simply evolving the DS concept, Citroën developed a completely independent design. With its aerodynamically shaped body, characteristic concave rear window and legendary hydropneumatic suspension, the CX once again set new standards in comfort, road handling and technical innovation.
Just two years after its introduction, Citroën expanded the range with the CX Prestige. This luxurious version received the extended wheelbase of the CX Break, providing significantly increased rear passenger legroom. The early Prestige models still featured the so-called flat roof, whose elegant proportions are particularly appreciated by collectors today. Later versions received a raised roofline to provide additional headroom for rear passengers.
With its combination of avant-garde design, exceptional driving comfort and prestigious character, the CX Prestige quickly became the preferred vehicle of numerous politicians, entrepreneurs and diplomats. Today, the CX is regarded as one of the last great representatives of an era in which Citroën uncompromisingly pursued its own technical philosophy.
This Citroën CX Prestige was first registered on 9 April 1976 in the French département of Var on the Côte d’Azur. Particularly noteworthy is its rare specification as an early Series 1 flat-roof model. Combined with the extended wheelbase, it creates the elegant silhouette that many enthusiasts consider the most harmonious version of the Prestige.
During the restoration carried out in 2016 and 2017, the bodywork was professionally refurbished. Today, the vehicle presents itself in a well-maintained and authentic condition, while the clear lines of Marcello Gandini – whose final design execution was completed at the Citroën design centre – perfectly showcase the timeless character of the CX.
The extended wheelbase provides an exceptionally spacious rear passenger area and makes the Prestige a true long-distance luxury saloon. The interior combines French comfort with the futuristic cockpit design of the 1970s. The characteristic instrumentation and ergonomically arranged controls still convey the unique driving experience that clearly distinguished the CX from its competitors of the era.
There are currently no indications of major wear or damage to the interior.
The defining feature of every CX is its hydropneumatic suspension, which filters out road imperfections almost completely while providing exceptional handling stability. This technical hallmark made the CX one of the most comfortable production vehicles of its time for decades.
The Prestige offered here has been regularly maintained by the renowned Citroën specialist workshop Ulrich Flory in Düsseldorf. Since completion of the restoration, the vehicle has been used exclusively as a second classic car, carefully maintained and driven accident-free at all times. There are no known indications of current maintenance requirements.
After delivery, the Citroën remained for many years in the region around Draguignan on the French Mediterranean coast. In summer 2007, the vehicle was brought to Germany by Dirk Sassen and Raimund Henke. The current owner subsequently acquired the CX and invested considerably in its preservation.
A copy of the original French registration document (“Carte Grise”) is available and documents the origin of this rare Prestige model. Together with the known ownership history, this provides a particularly well-documented provenance for a vehicle of this series.
Between 2016 and 2017, a comprehensive restoration was carried out at the renowned Citroën Garage Münster near Darmstadt. According to the owner, the investment amounted to approximately €20,000. In addition, the vehicle has been regularly maintained by Citroën specialists and has always been stored in a garage.
Early Citroën CX Prestige models with the flat roof are now among the most desirable variants of the entire CX range. They combine the elegant design of the first series with the generous interior space of the extended Prestige and represent Citroën’s spirit of technical innovation in perhaps its purest form. The documented French origin, extensive restoration and continuous specialist maintenance make this example an outstanding opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts of exceptional French automobiles.
There are luxury saloons that aim to impress – and then there is the Citroën CX Prestige. Even after half a century, its comfort remains astonishingly modern, while the hydropneumatic suspension allows the car to glide seemingly effortlessly over the road. The early flat-roof models possess an elegance that later Prestige versions never fully matched. In my view, the CX is one of the boldest and most characterful luxury vehicles of its era.
