Descrizione
The Mercedes Benz 220 SE Ponton Cabriolet offered for sale here was originally built for the German market and delivered to Karlsruhe. The car found its way to the USA and was brought back to Germany shortly before the turn of the millennium. Since 1994, the car has been in the same ownership. The owner restored the car over a longer period of time and brought it to its current condition. The gearbox was overhauled in 2005 and shifts perfectly. The car impresses with its classic silver colour scheme, black leather and a smooth-running engine.

History of the series
Just 2,178 of the Ponton Cabriolets were built during this period. It was the first self-supporting body without roof struts to be developed by Daimler-Benz. A very torsionally stiff floor assembly was used, which increased the vehicle weight by about 100 kg compared to the saloon, despite the shorter wheelbase and the absence of two doors.
Another special feature of the W 128 series is the fuel-injected engine. For the first time, this engine was produced in a relevant number of units for this series - despite the fact that it was hand-built. From September 1958, both the saloon and the convertible were available not only as carburettor versions but also as fuel-injection versions. This resulted in higher performance with lower fuel consumption and was regarded as a Daimler innovation. As a fuel-injected version, the Cabriolet was built 1,112 times and is today the most sought-after variant of this model series.
