Passion on Four Wheels – the 1979 Alfa Romeo GTV
Alfa Romeo has long mastered the art of building sporting everyday cars for a wider audience. With the Alfetta – still undervalued to this day – a number of particularly sophisticated technical features were added. The gearbox is mounted at the rear, directly on the differential, ensuring improved weight distribution. This heavy gearbox/differential unit is not connected to a live axle, however, but is mounted directly to the body shell. This principle, named after the French Count Albert de Dion, guarantees low unsprung mass combined with precise wheel control.
Inside, with its rev counter positioned directly in front of the driver, the Alfetta leaves no doubt as to the origins of its engineering: Alfa Romeo’s Formula One racing cars of the 1950s. That does not mean, however, that the GTV is merely a sporting coupé. Wedge-shaped in form and featuring a practical tailgate, it is very much a child of the 1970s. It is precisely this progressive modernity that sets it apart from its predecessor in the Giulia range, in whose shadow the Alfetta has unjustly remained.
Our Alfetta is presented in newly repainted Blu Olandese. The interior shows minimal signs of wear; the dashboard and rear parcel shelf are free from cracks or holes, and even the original radio blanking plate is still present. The Ronal alloy wheels suit the GTV exceptionally well, while the original wheels, the original steering wheel and the white headlamp units are also included. The GTV-typical lowered front end can be returned to its original ride height via the torsion-bar suspension.
In 2024, the current owner had the propshaft balanced and the clutch replaced; more recently, an electronic ignition system has been fitted. The veteran MOT certification remains valid for more than three years. A car for a true connoisseur, wishing to experience the road ahead behind what is perhaps the most beguiling four-headlamp face of the 1970s.
