Description
Mercedes-Benz G 500 4x4²: The Goliath Among the G-Class Models
"With the G 500 4x4², we are elevating the G-Class to a new level," says Gunnar Güthenke, Head of the G-Class Product Division at Magna Steyr in Graz, where this all-wheel archetype is manufactured. His confidence is not unwarranted. Güthenke describes this behemoth as unparalleled off-road and equally dynamic on the road. This statement lends a special significance to the model designation "4x4²."
Contrary to expectations, this model did not emerge on a mere whim. Though the G 500 4x4² might give off an impression of audacity, it represents a regression when compared to the impressive yet oversized 6x6. Thus, one could see it as the "younger" sibling of the six-wheeled giant.
Off-road, the G 500 4x4² proves itself a true beast. With nearly 50 cm of ground clearance, it effortlessly conquers rocky terrains and remains unfazed by water streams or large boulders, thanks to a wading depth of one meter. The real astonishment, however, is its handling on tarmac. Its extended track width of 30 centimeters, combined with carbon-extended fenders, allows it to take bends almost vertically and maintain remarkable composure even at high speeds.
The key to its striking versatility is the portal axles, a concept borrowed from the Unimog. This design enables the wheel hubs to be mounted lower, thus increasing ground clearance and track width. The G 500 4x4² also benefits from an adjustable rally-sport suspension that can be tuned according to need. The vehicle is introduced with two sets of tires: 325-sized tires on 22-inch rims for road use and special Beadlock wheels for off-road terrain.
Under the hood, a then-new V8 engine, derived from the four-liter engine of the sports car AMG GT, generates a proud 422 horsepower. This colossus accelerates impressively fast with a torque of 610 Nm.
Despite its impressive specifications and performance, Güthenke remains reserved about the final decision on whether the vehicle will enter mass production. Following its premiere in Geneva, the price could be around 300,000 Euros.
One lasting impression remains: The G 500 4x4² is virtually unstoppable on both tarmac and off-road. However, the real challenge for drivers might be getting into the vehicle itself, given that the door sill is nearly a meter high.
Whether on the road or in rugged terrains, this G-Class giant offers an unparalleled driving experience.
