A fantastic opportunity for the serious G-Wagen aficionado. This 240GD Cabrio was built in September ’79, making it one of the earliest surviving W460s.

Conceived in 1969, in was 1979 by the time the car went into production, with the big public unveiling happening at the launch event at an off-road proving ground in Toulon, France. The G went on public sale in September of that year.

This 240GD was built by September 6th and first registered in November making it one of the first to be released. It was supplied new to France, and prior to coming to the UK in 2022 appears to have been in the Cognac area of Charente. Perhaps it belonged to a vineyard, we are not sure.

Now registered in the UK as a historic vehicle.

Starts, runs and drives and has had new brake calipers and an exhaust system fitted recently, but we would not say it’s ready for the road and will need going through.

The original four-cylinder OM616 has been replaced with a five-cylinder OM617 at some point in its life.

As the photos hopefully show, the chassis is in amazing condition with no corrosion and still wears its original paint. Generally, thanks to being in drier climate, the underbody is in fantastic condition as the photos in the wheel arches show. However, the floors will need attention, most likely from damp becoming trapped under the rubber mats.

Bodily the G is very original, albeit a bit battle scarred. The left rear corner piece has been replaced with a genuine panel at some point.

Inside all the early features are still there and the front seats have recently been retrimmed in the correct basket-weave vinyl. The rear seat is original. The hood, frame and spare wheel carrier are missing.

This early G-Wagen offers an excellent basis for restoration as these early cars prove particularly collectable, especially cabriolets.
