What a find! This striking historic rally car was restored and upgraded to full stage rally specification in 1993. Originally it had the 1.8 Litre B 18 engine but was later fitted with a B20 engine slightly oversized at 2036cc. It features a high lift camshaft , official Volvo performance tuning kit, heavy duty servo, Swedish police alternator and many other modifications which when subsequently rolling-road tested, produced around 146 BHP at the wheels. It also has a low ratio back axle modified to eliminate the axle tramping for which this model was quite prone. This improved the car for the type of the competitions it was entered for.
At a later date Solex Carbs were fitted and accepted as being used in period but the car reverted back to the present SUs as being more user friendly. Prior to the last owner buying it in 2003, this awesome machine had a long and varied rally career competing in LeJog, the gruelling Lands End to John O'Groats reliability trial after its first renovation, an event which it later repeated. It won the Welsh Historic Rally Championship in 2000 with John Worthing at the wheel. The last owner has done considerable work simplifying and improving its electrical reliability, balancing the prop shaft, rebuilding the gearbox with competition strength overdrive, competition specification brake calipers and a new straight-through exhaust system.
In its last ownership the car has regularly competed in international events including the Welsh Challenge, Circuit of Wales where it achieved a commendable 3rd overall. In February 2006 it completed the Winter Challenge from Chantilly to Monte Carlo - a competitive distance of 2500 kilometres. It finished 1st in class, was 4th overall in the Clubman's Competition, and achieved 1st male/female team.
Notable achievements include:
Rally of Norway - 2400Km - 3rd overall in Clubman's competition
Marathon from Ypres to Cortina in Italy, 2550km via a mist and snow covered Stelvio Pass!
Beaune to Biarritz, 2300km of challenging ‘old Monte-Carlo Rally' roads of the Ardeche and Pyrenees - 1st in Class
It has always competed well, often against more exotic machinery. Commendably the car has never failed to finish an event including the marathon Circuit of Ireland in 2012. The Amazon has come to us in the sort of condition where it is ready to compete once again. This would be the ideal car for next year's Winter Challenge to Monte Carlo or more locally LeJog. The original rear seats are with the car so it can easily revert to a road car rather than a stage rally car and there are some spares including a spare engine and a set of wheels with winter tyres.
Incredibly, Amazon Rally car has come to us with an Amazon estate car bearing the consecutive registration number! It would be wonderful if they could remain together with the cavernous estate being the rally support car, but they are for sale separately. The history file contains the competition car logbook and the wealth of history on its exciting past. Great fun and a super competition history.
