Citroën Ami Super Classic Cars for Sale
The Citroën Ami Super is a car that was designed and produced by French auto manufacturer Citroën between 1961 and 1978. The Citroën Ami Super, for several years, remained the best selling model in the entire France, with a total of 1,840,396 units getting to the market in that period. Others referred to the Citroën Ami Super as the 3CV, which meant horsepower since the car was well powered and aerodynamics considered to minimize drag. The car came with engines ranging from 602 cc, and it was not surprising to realize the 2CV was considered to have a big engine since economical cars could have engines smaller than that.
Technical innovation and versions of the Citroën Ami Super
The Citroën Ami Super, which made a debut appearance in the market in 1961, first came powered by a 602 cc 2-cylinder flat engine. The suspension was also unique as it used trailing arms and coil springs, which were joined from the front to the rear end. The Citroën Ami Super was the first car design from the company to come with the rectangular shaped headlights, which were innovated by Hella, a lighting manufacturing company. Until 1975, the rectangular shaped headlights remained illegal in the U.S. market, so the Citroën Ami Super did not have a solid market for the cars in this region. Most of the cars were sold in France through the whole of 1961, with several upgrades getting implemented to make the car better. The fixed rear door windows were replaced horizontal two-part windows, just like the ones used for the front doors.
The Citroën Ami Super did not make as many sales as the 2CV did in 1962 as only 85,358 units were sold compared to the 2CV’s 144,759. The Citroën Ami Super was classified as the Ami 6, which was produced in the period between 1961 and 1962. This saw the introduction of the Citroën Ami Super 8, designed and presented by Heuliez. Some of the changes that were effected included a sloping bonnet and the slope of the rear window was increased. The Ami 8 was also longer than the Ami6. All these models were powered by a 1015 cc flat-four engine, which would produce 55 bhp, but the company had to come up with surplus engine since most buyers thought this was too underpowered for a car of the class. One of the things that distinguished between the Citroën Ami Super and the Ami 8 was the performance difference, with the Super beating the Ami 8 in many areas.
Citroën Ami Super - French and Spanish productions
A new plant was opened in France in 1961, and the Ami 6 was the first car to leave the plant for the French market. The company later introduced the Dyane and GS models to be manufactured in the same plant. The Spanish plant produced both the Ami 6 and Ami 8 and was operational from 1967 to 1978.
