The History of the BMW 750
The Bayerische Motoren Werke was founded in 1916. During World War One the company, under another name, had produced aircraft engines but were forced to discontinue this after the Treaty of Versailles. Initially manufacturing motor cycles the company began the manufacture of motor cars in 1928. The first BMW car was the Dixi, based upon the English Austin 7. The company went on to produce further aircraft engines during World War Two. By 1958 BMW were experiencing financial difficulties with their automotive decision; one solution was the acquisition of the rights to the Iso Isetta bubble car. The power for these tiny vehicles was provided by a modified BMW motorcycle engine. It was the 1500 model that re established BMW as a notable motor car manufacturer in 1961. The BMW 750 was introduced at the same that Jaguar introduced their X40, and comparisons were drawn. The BMW 750, however, offered the option of a V12 engine which gave it the advantage over the British car. A V6 engine was also available. The BMW 750 E32) was offered in standard and longer wheelbase versions to accommodate limousine orders. The BMW 750 (E32) was first introduced in 1986. Both V6 and V12 engines were offered, the latter being of a five litre capacity. The BMW 750 (E32) offered luxury refinements such as double glazing, a wine cooler, traction control system and telephone and fax machine. Almost all of the BMW 750 vehicles were fitted with automatic transmission. Whilst most BMW 750 vehicles for the US market were equipped with leather upholstery, it was possible to obtain one with cloth upholstery in Europe.
