Model history

Although the word "pagoda" conjures up distant, exotic lands, Mercedes’ W113 series got its legendary name from a rather dull German industrial building designer, Paul Braque, who designed the model’s characteristic hardtop. His aim was to create good visibility and spacious headroom for the driver and passenger. The roof is elevated - like a pagoda roof - in the middle, hence the increased headroom and the name. Rather remarkably, this model was launched on the market as a roadster. Moreover, the W113 series was intended to replace the already legendary 300SL Roadster, and hence, one of this car’s recurring style elements is the similarity of the headlights. As for driving characteristics, the 113 series marked a great leap forward for Mercedes. Automotive journalists at the time described the car’s handling as if driving “on rails”. Moreover, for the first time, serious attention was paid to safety: in 1964, the SL was the first sports car in the world to come replete with a rigid passenger compartment, with the trunk and engine compartment serving as crumple zones. In order to reduce the vehicle weight, the door panels, hood and trunk lid were made of aluminum. Although the model’s ‘SL’ designation stands for ‘Sporty Light’, the SL was more of a touring car than a true sports car, despite the use of lighter materials. This 250SL was fully restored in 2013, everything was revised or renewed, and the actual costs of such a project quickly exceeded that of this car’s current purchase price. Here, then, is a car that looks ‘like new’ and will reliably take you wherever you wish to go.

Equipment

Back in those days, option were not the profit-generators they are today for Mercedes. This 250SL comes with an authentic radio. Moreover, while most SL’s come with leatherette interiors, the model offered here features beautiful dark blue leather on the seats and pristine dark blue velour floor mats.

Exterior

A body in the color code, 350H, Medium Blue. Exceptionally tight and rust-free metal plating, and flawless paintwork. The entire car is free of damage. High quality paintwork with a beautifully deep shine. All chrome elements were renewed and contrast beautifully with the dark blue paintwork. The dark blue convertible top is like new. The undercarriage is hard, rust-free and original. A stunningly stylish 250SL for those who want to drive and polish.

Interior

Here, too, all is flawless and like new. Beautiful deep dark blue leather on the seats, door panels and dashboard. Deep dark blue velour upholstery and mats on the floor and doorsills. All gauges are perfectly legible and function as they should. The wood is newly painted. The seats were also restored and refilled, offering perfect support. The ivory-colored steering wheel is a beauty to behold.

Enginecompartment, trunk space, wheels & tires

In the engine compartment, everything is extremely well maintained. All engine technology was disassembled and only returned after passing series of tests. The car therefore drives excellently. The engine starts immediately, runs smoothly, has perfect oil pressure and does not smoke. Original model plates present. The trunk has a new mat. The trunk floor is flawless. Comes with a full-size spare tire and car tools. We equipped the attractive wheels with new Michelin tires

History file

Purchased new in Italy in 1968. A European model. Professionally and extensively restored in 2013 and since then rarely driven. Consequently, in extremely fine and fine-driving condition. Delivered with hard top, new MOT, servicing and ‘old blue’ Dutch license plates.
