Description

Back in 1962 when the Giulia was presented as successor for the popular Giulietta, the result was a true technical tour de force and the very epitome of a GTI car. A compact family car with a sporty engine, very effective brakes and not least excellent road holding. All wrapped in a discreet body design, where you had to be quite knowledgeable to realize, that this car would be a serious match for so-called pure breed sportscars.

Apart from being technically advanced with the famous “Nord” twincam engine, disc brakes all around and a 5 speed gearbox, Alfa Romeo had for the first time made use of a wind tunnel when developing the body for a production model. Looking at the car you would not expect it to be particularly aerodynamic, but in fact the car has a Cw coefficient of just 0.32 – similar to a Porsche 911.

In order to get the car homologated for the European Touringcar Championship, Alfa Romeo produced 501 examples of the Giulia TI (Turismo Internazionale) in a special lightweight partly aluminum version, called the Giulia TI Super.  The very few examples surviving their racing career are today highly coveted collectors items in line with the GTA models.

This very early Giulia TI underwent a thorough restauration some few years ago where it was tuned to match TI Super specifications – and more so. At the same time the cabin was treated with a complete leather interior and the overhauled 2-litre engine was upgraded with a modified cylinder head, sporty cams and increased compression. Add to this a nice sounding 60mm 4-2-1 free flow stainless steel exhaust and fine tuning of carburetors and ignition, so that the engine pulls strong and evenly. Also the transmission was restored and the rear axle with differential is from a 2 liter version with 25% LSD. All this adds up to a very sporty yet drivable Giulia, which feels at home equally on or off the track. As well the suspension was improved with Eibach springs and stiffer bushings and the whole package was completed with nice – and for a TI Super correct – 15” aluminum wheels with Pirelli tires.
