History


The Bentley S2 is a luxury car produced by Bentley from 1959 until 1962. The successor to the S1, it featured the new Rolls-Royce - Bentley L Series V8 engine and improved air conditioning made possible by that engine's increased output. Power steering was also standard, and a new dashboard and steering wheel were introduced. Some early S2s were built with the earlier S1 dashboard. 1,863 standard and 57 long-wheelbase S2 car chassis were built between 1959 and 1962. Almost all were fitted with standard factory bodywork. A number had coach built bodies by Park Ward, Hooper, H. J. Mulliner & Co., and James Young. The "S2 Continental" chassis was built with higher performance engines and higher gearing for lighter bodywork. 388 were built, bodied by the same group of coachbuilders as the standard Series 2.      

Comments

It is in fine fully restored condition, supported by a recent history file containing details of the work carried by ourselves and Frank Dale. First registered as GM13 in May 1961 delivered to Mr G Marcow of London, this Continental was bodied by Park Ward as a Drop Head Coupe, it was subsequently uprated to the Series 3 specifications with the Chinese eye headlamps. After spending it’s early years in the UK, in the late 1970’s it was sold to the USA where it had only two owners prior to sale in 2016, it was previously described as being in excellent restored condition with a new leather interior which it still retains. The mileage was reported as being 15589 miles in February 1979, and from the service records accompanying the car the mileage slowly climbs to only 22136 miles On leaving the USA it was purchased by a collector in Jersey who entrusted the car to us for the first part of a second restoration project the final stage being completed by marque specialist Frank Dale & Stepson. Since 2017 a sum in excess of £250000 in restoration costs resulting in the Continental being highly commended in the 2019 Bentley Drivers Club Salon Prive at Blenheim Place  

Body

The coachwork has been fully restored and is in show condition finished in Tudor grey, it is complimented by the black leather interior with grey hood. The coach work and interior are now in showroom condition, the body having been removed from the chassis during restoration by Frank Dale & Stepson.      

Interior

The interior has been finished in black leather, with new carpets and new hood. Beautifully finished dashboard and woodwork.

Mechanical

Mechanically the car has been gone through end to end, we will shortly publish details of the works carried out when we have the history file to hand. The service indicate that the cylinder head has been overhauled, the gearbox has been replaced with an exchange unit, rebuilt fuel system, brakes overhauled.
