La Austin.Healey 100 è una spyder prodotta dalla casa automobilistica inglese British Motor Corporation e commercializzata, dal 1953 al 1958, con il marchio Austin-Healey.

Storia e caratteristiche della Austin-Healey 100

Presentata al Salone di Londra del 1952, la Healey 100 è stata sviluppata da Donald Healey secondo il modello della Austin A90 Atlantic. Il design della spider colpisce l’amministratore delegato della Austin Motor Corporation, Leonard Lord, che trova nella Healey 100 il modello perfetto per rimpiazzare la A90. Da un accordo tra i due nasce la Austin-Healey 100 che sarà commercializzata a partire dall’anno seguente. Il nome del modello riporta, oltre ai cognomi dei due produttori, la velocità massima che il modello poteva raggiungere, ovvero 100 miglia all’ora, pari a circa 160 chilometri all’ora. Costruite dall’azienda Jensen Motors, utilizzando i componenti meccanici realizzati nelle fabbriche della Austin, le Austin-Healey 100 vengono prodotte in quasi 15 000 esemplari.

Lunga 3,85 metri, larga 1,54 metri e alta 1,25, la Austin-Healey 100 riprende alcune caratteristiche meccaniche della berlina a due porte A90; in comune, i due modelli hanno il motore 4 cilindri da 90 CV. Non tutti i modelli di Austin-Healey 100, però, mantengono le medesime peculiarità; in alcuni casi, ad esempio, il motore della spyder viene potenziato.

Evoluzione della Austin-Healey 100: le serie e i modelli prodotti

Il primo modello di Austin-Healey 100, che prende il posto della Austin A90 Atlantic, viene contrassegnato con la sigla BN1 e prodotto dal 1953 al 1956: l’automobile riprende lo stesso motore della Austin A90, al quale viene affiancato un cambio a tre marce. A soli tre anni di distanza dal suo debutto, viene introdotta sul mercato la serie BN2: il nuovo modello presentava essenzialmente un’unica novità, vale a dire il cambio a 4 marce. Il 1956 vede l’ingresso sul mercato di un altro modello di Austin-Healey 100, la 100-6: il nome del modello fa riferimento al motore 6 cilindri da 102 CV. La Austin-Healey 100-6 resterà sul mercato per due anni e sarà prodotta nelle versioni BN4 2+2 e BN6. Tra gli altri modelli, è degna di nota la Austin-Healey 100 M, un’automobile presentata nel 1955 e caratterizzata da un design innovativo con cinghie di cuoio a bloccare il cofano motore. Per quanto riguarda la potenza del motore e le performance offerte dalla Austin-Healey 100, è d’obbligo un riferimento alla versione 100 M con motore da 110 CV e alla versione 100 S con motore da 132 CV; di quest'ultimo modello, straordinariamente potente rispetto agli altri e caratterizzato al tempo stesso da un elegante carrozzeria in alluminio, vengono prodotte poche decine di esemplari.
