BMW 329 Classic Cars for Sale

The BMW 329 was a sleek and stylish mid-range convertible manufactured from 1936-1937 to add a reasonably priced small family car to the current BMW range.

The Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Bavarian Motor Works; BMW) is a German manufacturer of luxury vehicles, based in Munich. Founded in March 1916, they originally produced aircraft engines (interesting fact - their logo represents the Bavarian flag and also reflects the blue of a propeller against a white sky), and they subsequently moved into production of motorcycles and automobiles (as per their slogan, "the ultimate driving machine") in the 1920s.

The birth of the BMW 329

The BMW 329 was first manufactured in 1936; it combined the chassis of the BMW 319 model and the fenders and other stylistic elements of the BMW 326 touring sedan/saloon. Its design was actually based on a drawing from the Daimler-Benz plant that had been disregarded for an earlier BMW model. The BMW 329 was available as a two-seater Drauz convertible or a four-seater convertible, both with leather interiors. The BMW 329 was created to add a mid-range family car to the BMW range, priced slightly lower than the BMW 326. It had an FMR layout, a 6-cylinder OHVI4 (overhead valve inline four) 1.9 L engine with 45 hp, a wheelbase of 2,400 mm, a kerb weight of 750 kg and a top speed of 68 mph.

The two-seater was more aesthetically pleasing than the long-bodied four-seater version with its overemphasized tail. One particularly beautiful iteration of the BMW 329 two-seater had a shiny cream body, shiny black wheel guards and a black hood. The inside trim fashioned a black on cream cow pattern. Over 1000 of the BMW 329 four-seater model were produced, and just 42 of the two-seater Dauz convertible.

The death of the BMW 329

In the 1930s, the BMW 329 two-seater sold for 5,800 Reichsmarks and the MBW 329 four-seater for 4,950 Reichsmarks. The BMW 329 was stylistically outdated and was discontinued in 1937. It was superseded by several more modern BMW models such as the 320 in 1938.
