BMW 320 Classic Cars for Sale

The BMW 320 was a two door touring saloon car produced between 1937 and 1938, manufactured by the Bayerische Motoren Werke in Eisenach, Germany.

The History of the BMW 320

The BMW 320 was a touring saloon that replaced the BMW 329 which was based upon the 319 model. The first vehicles appeared in 1937, powered by a 1,971cc straight 6 engine going through a 4 speed manual gearbox. The BMW 320 was built on a shortened version of the BMW 326 frame, using BMW 329 suspension which was of independent front, with high-mounted transverse leaf springs acting as upper control arms and a rear live axle mounted on semi-elliptic springs. The BMW 320 has become a classic and the design, quality and performance of this and other BMW motor cars has made the name synonymous with prestige, power and performance. From the first BMW car, the Dixi, itself based upon the British Austin 7, to the BMW 320 saw only nine years pass.

BMW 320 variants and BMW now

The BMW 320 was launched in July 1937 and remained in manufacture for only one year. The BMW 320 was smaller and lighter, and less expensive than its predecessor the 329. Easy to handle and with plenty of power the BMW 320 became very popular and remains so today as a classic, stylish, vintage motor car of distinction. Despite the classic vehicles such as the BMW 320, the company suffered financial difficulties and in 1958 consideration was given to bankruptcy; but the company fought on and went on to become one of the classic prestige names in motoring. The designation BMW 320 has been applied to modern day BMW models that are from the 3 series range having engines of two litres capacity. The modern day 3 series and BMW 320 model was launched in 1975. The modern day BMW 320 has been available in Saloon, coupe, convertible and touring styles, with both diesel and petrol engines of four and 6 cylinders. A total of six generations of the latter-day BMW 3 series have been launched to date. Today BMW is parent company to Rolls Royce and also produces the iconic Mini car.
