During the economic boom and thanks to the arrival of television, we begin to dream of the comforts of life in Hollywood. In this climate, US importer Alfa Romeo Max Hoffman asked the car manufacturer to produce a compact convertible, so as to be able to win over the American public as well. In a short time a competition was called, during which prototypes were proposed by Bertone and Pininfarina. But it was Pininfarina, led by Franco Martinengo, who won this challenge.
The "Giulietta Spider" is powered by a longitudinal four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,290 cm³ delivering 65 hp of power (80 hp since 1958), which allows the car to reach a top speed of 155 km/h (165 since 1958). The base is in light alloy with cast iron cylinder liners. The cylinder head was made of light alloy, with a spark plug in the center of the combustion chamber. The power supply includes a Solex carburetor, distribution with two valves per cylinder, arranged in a V, controlled by two overhead camshafts with chain drive. The traction is rear. The brakes are drum brakes on all four wheels. The front suspensions are independent, with deformable quadrilaterals, coil springs, hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and anti-roll bar; the rear ones are rigid bridge, guided by longitudinal arms and reaction triangle, always with coil springs and hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.
It was produced from 1955 and was immediately an enormous international success. The finishes were very accurate. In 1959, they produced a restyling with a 5 cm long platform. Round reflectors positioned underneath the rear lights. The engine now had a power of 80 hp. The interior had also undergone some changes, such as the passenger seat that could now be adjusted and a comfortable object holder that in this new version had the door.
This magnificent 1960 model, in its original colour, has been restored both from the point of view of the bodywork, where one cannot help but notice the attention with which the now famous criticalities of the model have been taken care of, and of the engine in terms of mechanics and components, and last but not least also in its interiors, which have been redone trying to maintain, where possible, some original parts of the time, scrupulously following the original specifications of the company.
This beautiful spider proudly shows on its original odometer that reports 60,000km.
