In the early fifties, Volkswagen wanted to be able to offer a more stylish and elegant car in addition to the Beetle. It turned to coachbuilder Karmann from Osnabrück who entered into a partnership with the Italian design agency Ghia from Turin. It became a successful collaboration and the first Volkswagen Karmann Ghia ran off the line in Osnabrück in 1955. The car was built on the chassis of the Beetle and got the same air-cooled boxer engine in the back. The Karmann Ghia did not deliver real sports performance, but the beautiful two-door model and the reliable technology made the car extremely popular.
In 1959 a facelift version was introduced, recognizable by the enlarged grilles in the nose, the changed position of the headlights and the changed taillights. It is this version that is offered at Classic Park. The car is equipped with a rear-mounted 1493 cc four-cylinder boxer engine that is linked to a semi-automatic transmission. The Karmann Ghia was delivered new in the Netherlands and has had one owner since 1990.
The car has been restored in the past, with the paint and interior renewed. The engine has also been restored. The Karmann Ghia has a glossy dark blue metallic paint and a beautiful contrasting cream-colored leatherette interior. The whole is in very good condition.
