“Really Serious Racer”
1975 Porsche 911 RSR
Leviathan from Germany’s famous DRM era
Ready for a wide variety of seventies sportscar series

In use for half a century, Porsche’s RSR acronym has instilled fear into the hearts of any rival daring to challenge Weissach’s latest iteration of their ‘RennSport Rennwagen’. Since its debut in 1973, the Porsche RSR has maintained a reputation of being the car to beat at Le Mans, right up until its final incarnation, the 911 RSR-19 that competed in the GTE-Am class before bowing out at the end of the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship season.

The first-ever RSR was based on the Carrera RS 2.7, Porsche’s instantly recognizable road-legal sportscar, courtesy to its legendary ducktail-shaped rear wing. Lightened even further and helped by an engine bored out to 2.8 litres, the 1973 RSR stormed to victory on its debut, handing Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg a famous overall win in the Daytona 24 Hours, before Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller grabbed fourth overall and a consummate class win at Le Mans.

The next year, the RSR had grown into an even bigger monster, codenamed the M941. Its bulging wheel arches expanded the car’s width to about 1.90m while a 330hp 3-litre engine with an aluminium crankcase was dropped behind the rear axle, while mounted above it was its famous whale tail. Despite its Leviathan shape, the scales would show a weight of just 900kgs, resulting in a frightening 110hp/kg power-to-weight ratio. With the high-lift camshafts that became available into 1974, power was increased to 345hp.

With Porsche’s development rate in the mid-seventies proceeding at break-neck speed, the racing department soon focused its efforts on turbocharging their 911 racing proposition, ultimately resulting in the 934 and 935. As a result, they left the RSR in the hands of privateers including Kremer, Gelo and Brumos but also many smaller local teams that preferred the relatively simple but well-handling RSR. Some 60 1974-1975 RSRs in total were built at Weissach and went on to have massive success in the World Championship, IMSA, DRM as well as many local events.

This particular machine was converted from a road car into RSR-spec in 1990, after which its owners, Dr. Wilhelm Thomas from Aachen and Jurgen Albert from Oberhausen, campaigned it in club events ranging from the Noordzee Cup at Zandvoort to the DMC Rundstreckenpokal and the RGB Saisonfinale at the Nürburgring. Its current owner has remained the car’s third owner since conversion until this day, having successfully raced the RSR in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the UK between 2002 and 2011, recording no less than 11 overall wins, seven class victories and 3 Dutch GTCC championships from 22 starts.

The RSR’s practicality and versatility fully remains in historic racing, where it is eligible for a wide variety of seventies sportscar series, but also in historic rallying. Only recently, the Modena Cento Ore was won by a 911 RSR!

The car benefits from a full professional engine rebuilt to the highest standards followed by a Dyno test and a successful Roll-out session.
