In its day, this Bentley S2 was the pinnacle of tailor-made good taste for the distinguished gentleman driver. The car was delivered new in December 1961 via Jack Barclay Ltd. in Mayfair to a shoe manufacturer in Nottingham. It was painted Tudor Grey at the factory and fitted with a red leather interior – a colour scheme that the S2 still retains today. According to the delivery specification, the equipment included a sliding roof, electric windows, wheel-operated front vents, split rear seat cushions, radio, steering column-operated headlights, luggage straps, map light, Marchal horn and Marchal headlights with yellow lenses. The latter indicates that the Bentley was intended for touring on the European continent. It also has air conditioning, which was probably installed in the 1970s when the car was in the United States.
The S2 Coupé later spent around 15 years in the United States, with some overhaul work carried out in California being documented. In 1990, the Bentley returned to Europe and was re-registered in the United Kingdom. Since the mid-1990s, its owners have had the car serviced by local specialists without regard to costs. Extensive invoices document detailed work on the brakes, transmission, carburettors, air conditioning, interior trim, steering, suspension and exhaust system, as well as a repaint of the bare-metal bodywork. In addition, the engine was comprehensively overhauled in 2015 by the brand specialists ‘RR&B Garages’ in Bromsgrove, with invoices totalling approximately GBP 30,000.
This well-maintained and ready-to-drive Continental has participated in many famous European rally events and received numerous prestigious awards. The current German owner purchased the vehicle in September 2018. Subsequently, around GBP 12,000 was spent on a mechanical inspection/overhaul and various optimisations, primarily paintwork, wood trim and upholstery. This rare Bentley S2 Continental Sport Saloon is a beautiful, comfortable touring coupé for the discerning connoisseur and enthusiast of stylish, exclusive British automobiles.
