Austin-Healey 100, roadster emblématique des années 50

Emblème de son époque, l'Austin-Healey 100 est la première née de la fusion entre Austin et le constructeur anglais Healey. Sous la forme d'un roadster 2 places, doté d'un moteur à propulsion, ce fut un modèle automobile emblématique des années 50 tant du côté des voitures de tourisme que des courses automobiles. L'Austin-Healey 100, roadster élégant, fut le premier des trois "Big Healey", du nom des trois modèles dérivés de l'Austin-Healey 100 sensés se démarquer, avec l'Austin-HealeY 100-6 et la 3000, par leur taille et leurs capacités, des modèles plus petits de la marque, les "Sprite".

Une authentique voiture de son temps, née à Warwick en Angleterre

C'est la rencontre entre deux marques qui est à l'origine de l'Austin-Healey 100, automobile typique de son temps. Lors du London Motor Show de 1952, Austin, dont la marque est en perte de vitesse suite à l'échec commercial de son modèle A90, cherche un nouveau modèle pour lui succéder. Leonard Lord, le patron d'Austin, tombe alors en admiration du prototype "Healey Hundred" exposé à cette occasion, produit par le constructeur Donald Healey Motor Company, à Warwick en Angleterre, proposé sur une variante du modèle d'A90 Atlantic. De cette rencontre naquit un accord entre Austin et Healey pour la production d'une Austin-Healey 100 dont le terme 100 correspond aux 100 mph (160 km/h) que son moteur permet d'atteindre.

L'Austin-Healey 100 à travers toutes ses évolutions

L'Austin-Healey 100 est l'une des grandes productions d'Austin à l'époque. Produite entre 1953 et 1956, sur des moteurs 4 cylindres ou 6 cylindres, cette automobile fut vendue à 14 634 exemplaires. L'Austin-Healey 100 se déclina au cours de ces années en plusieurs versions de roadster 2 places. Les premiers, nommés BN1, étaient déjà capables de passer de 0 à 100 km/h en 11,2 secondes pour une vitesse maximale de 171 km/h. C'est à ce jour le modèle le plus vendu, à plus de 10 000 unités, un réel succès dès sa sortie, jusqu'à son remplacement en mai 1953 par la BN2, vendue à 4600 unités. Cette Austin-Healey 100 BN2 était équipée d'une boîte manuelle à 4 vitesses, et de performances remarquables de son temps, avec un taux de compression moteur 8:1:1 et atteignant une puissance de 110 ch. Parallèlement à ces créations de roadsters BN1 et BN2 taillés pour la route, l'Austin-Healey 100 se déclina également en versions fabriquées directement pour la compétition automobile. Preuves en sont données avec l'Austin-Healey 100 S - 132 ch, 4700 tours/min, freins à disques pleins - et l'EVV 106.
