Partially restored, Austrian historic vehicle registration
Description
For sale is a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb W111 Cabriolet. This vehicle uniquely combines history, luxury, and style, offering classic car enthusiasts a rare opportunity to acquire a true collector's item.
The convertible has been lovingly maintained, partially restored a few years ago, and already has Austrian historic vehicle registration and is currently located in Austria (near Graz). Previously, the classic car was registered in Germany. The original German registration document is still available.
The body and interior are in good to very good condition, retaining some of the original charm. Estimated condition: exterior grade 2-, interior grade 2. The paintwork is in its original factory finish, DB light beige. The engine is a period-correct 2.2-liter six-cylinder unit producing 88 kW (120 DIN hp). The Austrian roadworthiness certificate (Pickerl §57a) is valid until July 2026.
The following work was carried out during the last service:
Oil change and oil filter
Spark plugs and battery replaced
Transmission oil and transmission shaft seal replaced
Crankshaft seal and differential seal replaced
Lower left control arm, shock absorber, and steering linkage replaced
Master brake cylinder replaced and wheel bearings adjusted
Front brake hoses replaced
The W 111 belongs to the famous Mercedes-Benz "fintail" series, also known as the "large (rear) fin." In the USA, it was called the "Fintail Mercedes." These characteristic fins actually served as an aid to facilitate reverse parking.
The automotive group placed great emphasis on safety, which is why this classic car is equipped with advanced crumple zones. These zones ensure that the stability of the passenger cell remains high and the risk of injury to the occupants in an accident is relatively low by partially absorbing the impact energy through the softer body sections at the front and rear axles. Furthermore, the W 111 features wedge-pin door locks, which increase the stability of the passenger compartment and prevent the doors from flying open in an accident.
Various safety measures were also implemented in the interior: These include a padded dashboard with flexible, partially recessed controls and a steering wheel with a padded center section. Seat belts were available as an option.
The C models (coupés and convertibles) were also the last vehicles to be largely hand-built, which resulted in prices almost twice as high as those of the sedans!
With its elegant design and first-class workmanship, the convertible is a real head-turner on the road. Take the opportunity to experience this masterpiece of automotive history for yourself.
