Description

This rare Mercedes Benz 220 A coupe of the series W187 is one of only 85 produced coupes. As one of the rarest post-war Mercedes Benz models, this example is an absolute must-have for enthusiasts and collectors. It comes from an important collection and has been conserved.

During an extensive and first-class restoration, many components of the vehicle were renewed and overhauled.

The black paintwork in combination with the yellow fog lights and the yellow radiator grille do not stand out at first glance, however, they provide enthusiasm at second glance.

In the interior, new leather in green was used, which complements the dark but strong burl wood excellently.

A special eye-catcher, as with the convertible, are the rear-hinged doors, which are colloquially known as "suicide doors".

Under the hood, the 6-cylinder in-line engine with 2,195 cc displacement and 85 hp provides sufficient thrust from any position.

Due to the very low number of pieces, this Mercedes Benz 220 A Coupé should not be missing in any collection. For someone who loves to enjoy sunny days in one of the rarest post-war models from the house of Mercedes Benz, which the neighbor most likely does not also own, or participate in world-class rallies, the coupe can be awakened from sleep and made roadworthy at any time.

History of the series

The Mercedes Benz 220 W187 was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1951. The Coupé was taken up only later in the year 1953, at desire of many prominent ones, into the series. A number of 85 units, made the coupe one of the rarest post-war models in the history of Mercedes Benz. Particularly at the 220 was the body, which still strongly corresponded to the style of the Vorkriegszeit. However, the technology and the chassis convinced the trade press with significantly better driving performance in contrast to the 170 S with its 52 hp. The newly developed M 180 engine was the first short-stroke post-war engine from Mercedes Benz. The 6-cylinder in-line engine with 2,195 cc developed a proud 80 hp, allowing a top speed of 140 km/h. From 1954, the Coupé and A Cabriolet received a higher-compression, more powerful engine with 85 hp.
