History of the Volkswagen Golf Typ 330

Volkswagen introduced the Golf Typ 330 in 1991 as the third Golf generation. Usually called the Golf III or Mk3, it moved the model’s appearance away from the sharper lines of earlier Golfs: the front became more rounded and the headlamps took on a distinctly oblong shape.

The new Golf received the 1992 Car of the Year award. Its specification reflected the expectations of the decade, with power steering, height adjustment for the driver’s seat, split-fold rear seating and equipment such as central locking, electric windows, electrically operated mirrors, headlamp levelling and a dust and pollen filter available according to version. Front airbags, and in some cars dual airbags, were also offered.

Alongside the three- and five-door hatchbacks, Volkswagen offered a Golf Cabriolet from 1993. The Cabriolet was sold from 1993 to 1997 and is often treated as the third-series open Golf, although it can also be regarded as a continuation of the preceding series.

Golf III / Mk3 model history

The Typ 330 designation identifies the Golf III generation, introduced in 1991. Within this series, buyers could choose CL and GL equipment grades, sportier GT and GTI versions, and hatchback or Cabriolet body styles.

The Cabriolet broadened the range from 1993, with an electrically operated hood available and a rear wind deflector commonly fitted or supplied as an accessory. For buyers looking for a more comprehensively specified Golf, the GTI and the 20th Anniversary edition are notable versions within the Typ 330 range.

What distinguishes the Golf Typ 330

The Golf III combined the familiar compact hatchback layout with equipment that was increasingly expected in the 1990s. Depending on specification, cars may have four electric window lifts, an electric sliding/tilting sunroof, air-conditioning or climate control, tinted glass, heated windscreen-washer jets, alloy wheels and an original Volkswagen Alpha cassette radio.

Cabrios add the open body and, on many examples, an electric hood. Hatchbacks retain the practical split and folding rear seat. Both manual and automatic transmissions were offered; automatic cars are noted for smooth shifts.

For the Classic Trader database figures provided, Typ 330 accounts for 100% of Volkswagen Golf listings and 100% of listing views in the supplied manufacturer-code data. That makes it the only Volkswagen Golf manufacturer code represented in these figures.

Volkswagen Golf Typ 330 technical data

Special models and notable versions

GT and GTI versions sit above the regular CL and GL models in the Golf III range. The GTI 20th Anniversary is specifically identified among the available Typ 330 variants; examples may also be fitted with Recaro seats, BBS or LM alloy wheels, velour trim and other period options.

For open-air motoring, the Golf Cabriolet is the distinct body style of the series. Examples can feature an electric hood and rear wind deflector.

Condition checks and maintenance

No model-specific weak spots were supplied for the Golf Typ 330. When assessing an advertised car, check the available maintenance record carefully: many examples are described with a Volkswagen service booklet or complete service history.

Confirm operation of equipment fitted to the particular car, especially the automatic transmission where applicable, central locking, electric windows, electric mirrors, electric sunroof, air-conditioning or climate control, and—on Cabriolets—the electric hood. The exhaust system’s centre and rear sections are designed as replaceable parts, which is useful when reviewing servicing invoices.

Engines, transmission and road manners

The Golf Typ 330 was available with manual and automatic gearboxes. Cars equipped with the automatic are described as shifting smoothly, while power steering was part of the package. The chassis is characterised in the supplied material as solid and reliable, making the Mk3 a practical 1990s Golf format rather than a stripped-out special.

  1. Golf CL and GL — regular equipment grades, available with manual or automatic transmission and a broad range of comfort options.
  2. Golf GT and GTI — sport-oriented versions within the Typ 330 family.
  3. Golf Cabriolet — the open variant sold from 1993 to 1997, with an electric hood available. undefined

Design, interior and equipment

The Golf III is recognisable by its softened front end and oblong headlamps. Paint choices listed for the series include Dragon Green, Classic Green and Alpine White, in both metallic and solid finishes. Tinted ‘Colorglas’ glazing was available.

Inside, trim could range from durable fabric to velour, while certain editions used Recaro seats. Period-correct details include original Volkswagen radios—among them Alpha cassette units—plus alloy wheels from BBS and LM designs. Options such as an electric sliding/tilting sunroof, four electric windows, electrically adjustable mirrors, air-conditioning, climate control and a non-smoking interior specification help distinguish individual cars.

Documents and everyday specification

A documented Volkswagen service history is particularly useful when comparing Golf Typ 330 listings. Check whether the service booklet, spare wheel and original radio are present, and whether options stated in the advertisement are functioning.

The car’s equipment can be unexpectedly varied for a 1990s Golf: heated washer jets, headlamp levelling, central locking linked with the sunroof on some cars, a pollen filter and folding rear seats all appear in the supplied specifications. Some examples may qualify for historic registration depending on local rules and the individual vehicle’s age and condition.

Volkswagen Golf Typ 330 summary

The Volkswagen Golf Typ 330 is the 1991-on Golf III/Mk3, available as a hatchback or 1993–1997 Cabriolet. Its rounded front, oblong lamps and wide spread of CL, GL, GT, GTI and 20th Anniversary variants define the range. When buying, match the advertised trim and options against the car itself, test all electrical and Cabriolet functions, and prioritise examples with a Volkswagen service booklet or traceable maintenance history.
