This Renault Left the Billancourt works in France on Sept 15th of 1910. It wears its original Tulip Body number 10426 clearly stamped upon the front seat timbers. The car was shipped directly to Australia where it was subsequently owned & driven by a French importer in Sydney.
The car was laid up early on its life & stored only being sold in 1957 when the estate it was in was broken up. Little used prior to lay up & sparingly used since, this is a low mileage chassis with no discernable wear on the foot pedals (Unlike some we handle) & absolutely taut tight play free steering as when new.
A member of the sporting car club, a Mr H Wilkinson bought the vehicle to Adelaide & replaced various perishable parts before selling it to club member David Lipsham who used it in original condition for club rallies up to 1966 when it underwent a 2 year restoration. It was then shown at many shows & attended a number of rallies in Australia prior to being purchased by the current decade long owner in the UK.
This car is simply put a delight to drive feeling in as new condition. Gears are three sequential forward speeds with reverse found by moving the lever rearwards. The car starts readily pulls well & easily ascends steep hills in first & second gears. Third is a big jump in ratios allowing for relaxed dare I say the words "High Speed" cruising.
The interior has balck buttoned leather seats with a wonderful patina of age yet being perfectly preserved & useable. The exterior is finished in blue and black with notably high front wings for negotiating the rutted tracks that passed for early roads in colonial Australia's first days.
A full length tonneau of beautiful quality mohair expertly constructed hides the rear seats when required & a similar piece covers the front seats on overnight stops. The car comes with a well fitted hood bag & a full length hood which may be easily erected single handedly with leather straps to hold down the whole enseble at the front. A tool box sits to the side of the car on the running board.
The car sits on wooden artillery wheels recently re-spoked by guild of wheelwrights craftsman Mike Rowland in Colyton Devon. It is worth visiting him at Wheelwrights Yard in Colyton Devon if you wish to see a true craftsman at work producing Vintage car & gun carriage wheels to simply the highest quality in the world. Beaded edge tyres are fitted to said whels. Interestingly an original "Boomerang pattern" tyre comes with the car in somewhat perished condition.
Being an early Edwardian, this Renault BZ is simply festooned in brass accoutrements; Lamps, horns, mirrors, hubs etc & other items to numerous to mention along with the brass of the coal scuttle bonnet in traditional Renault fashion.
A full set of functioning oilers is located on the bulkhead. Under the bonnet the car is equally tidy with a gleaming original 4 cylinder engine that was stripped & overhauled in 1979 with the bores being honed out & new rings fitted etc. At the same time the rear axle was disassembeld & checked with little needing doing other then taking up a little back-lash in the crown wheel & pinion again reflecting the low mileage of the car.
A comprehensive set of paperwork & instructions comes with the car including a copy of an original Renault manual pertaining to the car & notes from Renauly dating back to 1957 in the correspondence. Also a full set of service instructions & valve timing instructions etc. A period photo comes with the car showing a young lady in the back & a three horned trumpet mounted to the front which is currently missing. A future owner would do well to locate & install another original of the type.
Fitted with an electic start the car is simplicity in itself to operate & drive. It has a strong "Go anywhere" feel to it & indeed has undertaken a variety of french perabulations under the current aged ownership who are now relinquishing the car due to their advancing years.
The car is in our showroom for immediate viewings & simply put is a time warp machine harking back to days gone by. We have never had an example in finer condition & to drive it is a simple delight.
A lovely & antipodean appropriate Kookaburra bird mascot in brass adorns the radiator cap.
