Description
Built for Connoisseurs. Preserved for Enthusiasts – the 1970 Ferrari 365 GT (2+2)
When it debuted in 1967, the 365 GT (2+2) was considered heavy (1.8 tonnes) and long (nearly 5 meters) for a Ferrari. Yet this did nothing to dull its agility - quite the opposite: period testers praised its nimbleness and cornering ability. A key reason was the redesigned rear suspension: coil springs and double wishbones replaced the live axle with leaf springs used in its predecessor.
In 1968, Sports Car Graphic praised the 365 GT (2+2) as the perfect fusion of a sports car and a spacious luxury vehicle – a "racing cinema seat" equipped with air conditioning, a radio, and electric windows. The example offered here was ordered in April 1970 by the Jacques Swaters Garage Francorchamps SA in Brussels, where it served as a demonstrator starting in October.
In March the following year, it was sold to its first owner in Aix-en-Provence, who kept the car until 1979, when it changed hands to a new owner in Nice. Later, the Ferrari passed to a third owner, who changed the exterior color from Grigio Argento to deep red and added Plexiglas headlight covers.
In 2000, the car came to Germany, where it was owned by two more collectors until 2015. It was then acquired by its next owner in the Swiss canton of Ticino before being purchased by the current consignor. Recently, the car received a full service along with minor bodywork, paint correction, and leather care. A Tripmaster is installed in the glovebox, and music is provided by a modern radio with a retro design and rotary knobs. The most recent technical inspection (MFK) was conducted in 2018.
This is a magnificent piece of Italian automotive history – perhaps the finest expression of what this car-rich nation had to offer in the late 1960s. Or, to quote Sports Car Graphic in 1968: “Compare it to the best you know – and I’m convinced you’ll want for nothing.”
