1961 Porsche 356B T5 1600 Super Cabriolet Coachwork by Reutter
The Porsche 356 is widely regarded as one of the greatest sportscars ever produced. Conceived by Ferry Porsche and influenced by the Fiat-based Cisitalia designs of Piero Dusio, the 356 drew heavily on the Volkswagen engineered by Ferry's father. Like the iconic Beetle, it featured a platform-style chassis, a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and fully independent torsion-bar suspension. First unveiled in 1948, the 356 quickly established new benchmarks for compact sportscars and proved highly versatile in competition, from circuit racing to rallying. Its motorsport credentials were cemented in 1951 when a factory-entered car claimed victory in the 1,100cc class at the Le Mans 24 Hours, marking the beginning of Porsche's enduring relationship with the famous endurance race.
Open-top versions of the 356 were produced from the outset, though the model that truly captured attention was the Speedster, launched in 1954 following strong demand in the United States for a limited run of 15 special roadsters. Built by Reutter, the Speedster remained in production until 1958, when it was superseded by the more refined Convertible D. Key differences included a taller windscreen and wind-up side windows. Porsche outsourced cabriolet body construction to several coachbuilders over the years, most notably Glaser and Reutter early on. Production of the Convertible D, later renamed the 'Roadster', was handled by Drauz of Heilbronn, and subsequently by d'Ieteren of Brussels.
The introduction of the 356B in September 1959 brought with it a curved, one-piece windscreen, 15-inch wheels and a number of styling updates. Engine capacity was standardised at 1,600cc, with three levels of tune available. Excluding the four-cam Carrera engine, the most powerful option was the Super 90 unit producing 90bhp. Compared with earlier versions, the 356B offered notable improvements in comfort and drivability while retaining Porsche's core values of engineering integrity, reliability and mechanical durability.
Chassis number 154845 was originally supplied new to Volkswagen Mexico in 1961. The car later passed to Mr Larrinaga in 1987, during which time a series of MoT test certificates were issued in 1988, 1990, 1992 and 1993. In 2015, the Porsche was later acquired by respected marque specialist Roger Bray. As expected from a Roger Bray restoration, the car was completed to an exceptionally high standard and today presents in outstanding condition throughout.
Finished in striking Ruby Red with a beautiful contrasting grey leather interior, TSU 906 is equipped with an impressive range of desirable features and upgrades. These include headrests, a radio, inertia-reel seat belts, a full tonneau cover, hood bag, 12-volt electrical conversion, chrome wheels, wood-rim steering wheel, headlamp grilles, auxiliary spotlights, toolkit, jack and owner's manual.
