History
Introduced in 2001, the R230-generation Mercedes-Benz SL represented a significant evolution of the legendary SL lineage, combining Mercedes-Benz’s traditional emphasis on luxury and refinement with advanced technology and genuinely sporting performance.
The SL 500 was powered by Mercedes-Benz’s 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, producing 306 bhp and driving the rear wheels through the five-speed automatic transmission. Its combination of effortless performance, long-distance comfort and sophisticated engineering made the SL 500 one of the most accomplished grand tourers of its era.
The R230 also introduced a number of significant technological features to the SL range, including the innovative Vario roof, an electrohydraulically operated folding hardtop that transformed the car from a refined coupé into an open-top roadster at the touch of a button.
