The W126-generation S-Class is widely regarded as one of the finest cars ever produced by Mercedes-Benz, combining exceptional engineering, durability and refinement in a package that set the benchmark for luxury saloons throughout the 1980s. Built between 1979 and 1991, the W126 became the best-selling S-Class generation and remains highly prized by enthusiasts and collectors today. Representing one of the most desirable models in the range, the 500 SE paired the standard-wheelbase bodyshell with Mercedes-Benz's acclaimed 5.0 litre M117 V8 engine. Producing approximately 231 PS and driving through a four-speed automatic transmission, it delivered effortless performance, refined long-distance cruising ability and the engineering integrity for which the marque became renowned during this period.
Finished in elegant Nautic Blue metallic with grey velour upholstery, this remarkably original example was first registered on 30th August 1985 and supplied new to a local gentleman. The car benefits from an impressive factory specification, including electrically adjustable front seats, a Becker Mexico stereo cassette system, limited-slip differential, electric sliding roof, rear head restraints, anti-lock braking system (ABS), air conditioning, electric windows front and rear, heat-insulating glass, headlamp wash/wipe system, illuminated vanity mirrors, front folding armrest and factory alloy wheels. Particularly noteworthy are the dealer-supplied AMG upgrades when new, comprising the desirable blue AMG Penta alloy wheels and AMG suspension package, enhancing both the appearance and driving dynamics of the car.Maintenance undertaken in recent years includes regular oil services, a replacement battery and a new fuel pump. The history file contains a selection of previous MoT test certificates and the car is offered with its original book pack, toolkit and key.
While the car would benefit from a degree of recommissioning before returning to regular use, it nevertheless represents a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally low-mileage and highly original example of Mercedes-Benz's iconic flagship saloon. With outstanding provenance, long-term family ownership and desirable period AMG upgrades, this 500 SE offers a compelling combination of originality, specification and collectability.
